my new Big Boy X 44 mag

Post by deerwdr » Sat Jul 24, 2021 10:26 am

Dave here.

I found and bought a Big Boy X in 44 mag this week. The state where I hunt WT Deer passed a straight wall cartridges' statute allowing the use of rifles with straight wall cartridges in formerly shotgun only counties. Due to shoulder repairs, I needed to set my search for either a 44 mag or 350 legend.

I hope to benefit from the Henry experience here to help figure out the sight/scope options.

Welcome. Lot's of optics options for the Henry. I have a Nikon Buckmaster on my .41 mag due to 76 yo eyes. My typical range for deer is under 100yds, and haven't missed yet.

If your eye sight is still good, a lot of folks use the Skinner peep sights with success. Link is at the top of page.

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......

I’ll look for the skinner peeps. My concern is with the shot opportunities in twilight. Now that my eyes got fixed maybe I can see we’ll enough for a peep in low light. I’ve adjusted to the rifle scope combination forever , to keep from spending a fortune. I am tired of sliding my face up and down the stock to find the eye relief exact spot. I have a TC encore with a great Leupold on it , but I’ve never taken the time and effort to modify the stock or rings to fit me. Not repeating that.

Hey deerwdr I have a question for ya... Is your .44 mag rifle a side gate and if it is can you get the bolt out of it through the back if you take the lever off (like it should)? Lotta issues with this. Thanks! D

I bought the Tilley scope rail from Henry. It must be made to accurate specs because I mounted that old Bushnell 2-7 scope and cranked a round at 15 yards out back offhand. A couple inches high! So sighting in at the range tomorrow should go smooth. I’ll set up first at 25 then at 50.

I really want to set up peep sights but the there is not a matched pair set up for this Henry. Maybe someday, but this Bushnell snaps up perfect on 4-7 power which is where I shoot. The eye relief gets wonky at 2-3, which isn’t a power range I use.
