Apart from the restriction on semi's it's not actually difficult to own a firearm in Australia. There is some paperwork involved to get your license but nothing difficult. Once you actually have your license however it is easy enough to purchase as many firearms as you like. I have 12. Little bit of hysteria grew out of Australian firearms laws I think. We do have registration which, to me , is no big deal.

I can select and purchase a firearm and have it within my possession within a few hours.

Licensing does require a safety course. In my state it's free and takes about two hours and just teaches the basics of safe gun handling and a quick quiz, not difficult. Your first rifle does have a 28day cooling off period but that is lifted after your first firearm.

It's more a case of inconvenient than difficult to own guns here. It's been set up so you require some commitment rather than doing it on a whim.

first, welcome to the forum, happy to have you in our community .... info on Australian policies is appreciated .... its good to hear from someone with first hand knowledge .... do you hunt ? ... if so, what variety of game animals .... we have found our 45-70 to be an exceptional firearm .... what plans do you have for using yours .... will you be reloading our ammo .... if so, any comments on related government policies would be appreciated

Despite the popular misconception, you can own pretty much anything in Australia, up to and including a mounted Machine gun. It's just that as you progress through various license categories it becomes more difficult.

Category A - Bolt Action, Lever Action and Pump action rimfires
Single shot, double barrel and lever action shotguns.
Muzzle loaders and black powder cannons.

Category B - Bolt action, Lever Action and pump action centrefire rifles.
These are the most popular two categories and only require access to rural property, a letter from a certain government agency declaring an intention to hunt or be a member of an approved shooting/hunting club . All these are easy and cheap to attain.

Category C - pump action, semi auto shotguns
Semi auto rimfire
This category requires you to be a farmer with a certain size of land with a pest problem or a professional hunter.
Harder to attain and essentially restricted to those with a 'genuine need'

Category D - Semi Auto centrefire
Restricted to professional hunters that must prove they obtain a substantial part of their income from shooting.

Category E - machine guns ,short barrel shotguns, bazookas, tear gas guns etc. hard core military stuff basically.
Most of this stuff is restricted to law enforcement and the military. You can however get machine guns 'of historical significance' on a collectors license. Such as Lewis, Vickers and most other first and Second World War era hardware. There are various conditions and stringent storage requirements but they can be had. You can also get larger stuff like a bofors AA.

Category H - handguns. Revolvers and Semi's. You must be an active member of a pistol club. There is a minimum requirement on comps shot.

So while certainly not as convenient as America, if you are committed and jump through some of the beureacratic hoops, you can pretty much have whatever you want.

And yeah, once I get the 45-70 I hope to reload some cast pills for target shooting and some hotter jacketed stuff for hunting. I go hunting for bunnies, foxes, goats, pigs, wild dogs, feral cats and hoping to have a go at some deer shortly.
