never shot shorts or longs B4

Post by Roland the Headless » Mon Jun 08, 2020 7:21 am

I shot shorts for the first time thru the H001Y
I always shot long rifle in my .22s
I had mkIIs and a 10\22 so that is probably why
the shorts are kinda neat
I also bought some longs but haven't shot any of those yet
can anybody tell me what .22 longs are for???
this from a guy that shoots .327 .32 H&R and .32 long

the rifle is laser accurate ... one ragged hole at the short ranges we could shoot at
in fact any slightly off shots were my fault
I think at LR ranges it will be just as spot on

nice fishing and short shooting trip

I was told that the LR was longer, heavier and had a little more velocity. I know that the .22 long is an old cartridge dating back before 1890.

yea, know that it was a step up from a short to a long and a step up from a long to a long rifle
my question is there a reason for the longs to exist today ???
there is a LR that is quieter then shorts and with so many velocities to choose from in LR why have longs at all
Now I can see the reason for .32longs .32 H&R, .327 fed mag
There isn"t that much of a difference in .22 ...is there???

I did a little research.

The .22 Long is an iteration in the evolution of .22 rimfire cartridges.

The .22 rimfire (now known as the .22 Short) was the first American metallic cartridge ever made (1857).

The .22 Long (1871) was designed for revolvers and had a longer case and 25% more powder than the .22 rimfire, which then became known as a .22 Short. After it was introduced, the .22 Long was very popular because of it's effectiveness as a small game cartridge and was soon adopted for use in rifles as well as revolvers.

In 1887, the standard .22 Long case was loaded with a heavier, longer bullet which became known as the .22 Long Rifle. This essentially rendered the .22 Long obsolete, though it is still manufactured today.

Thanks for sharing this CT, after all these years of being a shooter I didn’t know this. Longer bullet - 22LR. Makes sense!
