New member from Georgia

Post by Smokeydawg » Sun Dec 02, 2018 5:45 pm

Just joined shortly after purchasing a Henry 30-30 to replace a miserable Marlin. I am looking forward to learning a few things on the forum. This gun will be used to hunt and with my eyes not being what they used to be, I will be mounting a scope on it. Any suggestions are welcome.
Also enjoy Bulldogs football and cooking on my egg.

Welcome, Dawg, it's good to have you here! Lots of great people here.
Recently acquired my Henry 30-30 and put a Leupold VX Freedom 2-7X32 on it and it's great for deer in the woods. Easy reach to 100 yds.
Please keep us posted on how you do with a fine replacement for that Marlin!

Hey Smokey! Welcome from Nebraska! As you have seen, ideas come quickly here. Enjoy your Henry.
Remember, it's not how many guns you have. It's how many bullets you have.

Welcome from the TV Oregon! Which model of .30-30 did you get? I got brass with octagon barrel.

_WELCOME!_.jpg
...and Greetings from the Show-Me-State, Smokeydawg.

Great choice of a .30-30 for deer hunting....lots of history and harvest for that caliber.

And is that a Big Green Egg you cook on? Very cool ceramic grill. It should do your venison just fine, too!

Thanks. I did not go with the brass. Because this would be used for deer hunting I was concerned about the finish flashing in the woods.

JEBar,
I do not load my own ammo at this point. My brother in law does that and gives me rounds.

we hand load for ours .... doing so opens a much larger world for 30-30 ammo .... for your consideration, we've found that Nosler/Winchester Combined Technologies 150 gr Ballistic Silvertips in our 30-30 (link below) perform exceptionally well .... flat shooting, small groups .... the best source to purchase them I've found is in the second link .... right now they are out of stock .... if interested, you can call them and they will email you when they have more

Esquared,
What type of mounting rings did you use? Worried about the clearance to the back sight.

Dawg,
Ordered the Talley-made rings off of the HenryPride website. Designed to line up with the holes in the receiver, so no rail (a cleaner look, IMO) to mess with. The "LOW" height worked out just fine. I also added the Hammer Extender, which you'd probably need anyway. Here are a couple of links and a pic.
