Sous Vide

Post by JEBar » Sat May 13, 2017 4:18 pm

having spoken with several folks who have experience with this type of cooking coupled with a 4.5 star rating after 1,961 reviews, we just took the plunge and ordered a Anova Culinary Bluetooth Sous Vide Precision Cooker from Amazon === https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00UK ... UTF8&psc=1 === it should be here on Tuesday and we are looking forward to putting it to work .... the following is a link to YouTube where there are bunches of videos showing this style of cooking https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=sous+vide

I'm looking forward to you report, JEBar. I've been interested in this technique for quite a while, too.

By the way, that link to Amazon doesn't work, but a quick search of their site for the product brought me right to it.

I have a camper full (OK, a bunch more at home and others out in the garage as well) of cooking equipment (AKA gadgets) that looked like a great idea .... some were/are, some not so much .... most were considerably more expensive than the Anova Cooker .... we like thick steaks cooked on the done side and there aren't many portable appliances capable of getting them done on the inside without being burnt on the outside .... our Holland grills (our traveling grill shown below) excel in this area and we consider them to be essential .... on days when its too messy to cook outside, I hope the Avona will be able to deliver the same quality

the best we have ever eaten .... we get them from the local butcher in the only grocery store in my wife's hometown where we spend the summer .... when we leave here on June 19th we will have over $2,000 worth on board .... over the years we have shared them with several friends who now want us to bring them some each year .... we will start dropping them on in KC and more in St Louis .... by the time we get home we will have $600 worth that we will put in the freezer

our Anova Sous Vide Cooker arrived today .... first impressions : a bit larger than I expected === seems to be solidly built === instruction manual seems to be a bit lacking, guess I'll have to go to the web ... the cookbook we ordered https://www.amazon.com/Sous-Vide-Home-T ... e+cookbook has a wealth of info about many dishes that look really good and as is usually the case, about some others in which I'd have no interest .... at first read, I admit to being pleasantly surprised at the wide range of foods available to this style of cooking

we spent a good portion of the day learning to use our Anova Cooker. .... it took a while but all's good that ends good and dinner tonight was really good .... we cut a South Dakota sirloin into three parts, vacuum sealed them, and used one during our trial runs and put the other two in the frig .... through testing we found worked up to a temperature that suited the way we prefer our steaks to be cooked .... over time we managed to get the test piece to where we could eat and to figure out a cooking temperature and time that works for us .... that most certainly wasn't a bad thing .... when the time came we cooked a one of the two remaining pieces and it came out really good .... our plans are to cook the remaining piece over the weekend .... our overall impression is very positive .... we will still use our Holland Companion for grilling steaks but do foresee using the Anova often .... with the help of a niece, my wife was able to download an app on her phone that can control the Anova and gives us a great deal of good cooking info .... that is really going to come in handy
