Cased Brass Frame Navy Pistol

Post by rayman1 » Thu Jul 16, 2020 12:51 pm

Here's another project case with a brass frame Navy pistol. Pretty simple project using cardboard, the material, toothpicks, and glue. It's quite sturdy, too.

It started as a project to show my son how to make one since we had the loose pistol and I had a few accessories in my shop. I wanted to show him that it can be made simply and in about two days to include the antiquing and staining. The box was an old egg box that was stripped down and redone with a few replacement screws in the hinges. I made it as more of a Frontier gunsmith-created presentation case.

Very nice presentation case! I know I would enjoy trying a project like that.
By no means a pro, however have the tools and have done some small un-related projects. Nice going!

That is nifty, I really like it. Are you concerned about the lid latch? It is pretty feeble, if the box should be dropped all the gun bits would go flying. Of course if this is just a static display, it doesn't matter.

Actually, the lid is fitted. On the othe side of it, there's another piece that's fit-matched to the opening. It's a triangle block that's smaller in outer edge size than the lid. When the lid is put on top of the opening of the compartment, it's quite a tight fit underneath and can be pushed down to about 1/8th of an inch. The top of the lid is then flush with the compartment wall. It's pretty precise of a tight.
