Help. Need to get a muzzleloader nipple wrench.

Post by PT7 » Mon Mar 30, 2020 10:41 am

I'm wondering how to determine what nipple wrench I need to order for my Pedersoli underhammer (.36Cal)? I tried the wrench I use on the Trapper, but no good....too large and slips with light pressure passed each corner of the nipple. I've thought about using needle nose pliers with some cloth wrapped around the nipple. Doubt if either an SAE or metric socket wrench would work; they're not designed to grab a muzzleloader nipple. Sure as shootin' with pliers or sockets, I would tear it up. So help. TIA.

Try to find a 'mini' open end wrench - such as a 1/4" one might fit. - as one does for the nipple on my Renegade.

Another idea is to 'custom make' a nipple wrench out of a screwdriver style nut driver.

Find one that fits around the nipple and cut slots in it to fit the 'flats' of the nipple. Heat and harden the end and you will have the best nipple wrench made!

I have done this myself - specifically for my .36 Navy - and this is it.

give this site a try ===> https://www.davide-pedersoli.com/tipolo ... pples.html
Thanks, Jim. Been reviewing that site info already. There is insufficient info on what size or style wrench will work for my Cook Underhammer. Possibly the gun is too new, too recently released in the market.

With the current health challenges in Italy, I've not contacted Davide Pedersoli on this yet. He and his brother have a lot more important things to be dealing with for their business & employees, I'd think. ~Bob

Thanks, MrEd. Of your two options, I might go with the 'mini' open end 1/4" wrench first. As long as the nipple is not too tightly screwed in, after I initially get it out, should be easy to insert back and lube it for the next time.

I do have a screwdriver style nut driver (it is a 1/4"), but don't have the means to cut slots or heat & harden it.

I've emailed their CS twice, and got quick responses, within 18 hours or so. But that was before the health situation escalated there. The person who answered was either the owner, Davide Pedersoli, or his brother. Just my choice to not contact them at this current time. ~Bob

One other thing you can do is call Track of The Wolf. I know they would know which one you need.

Yep - a mini open end works well.
If the nipple is recessed the wrench may not fit in and grinding the ends of the wrench narrower may be needed.
I still need to do this with mine as I have this problem with my Renegade!

Regardless it's probably either a # 10 pistol nipple or a # 11 rifle style.

Hey, Al,
I have called TOTW but the rep wasn't totally sure. He said he hasn't seen this new underhammer model yet, so he offered his "guess" between two smaller wrenches TOTW has, what he thought might fit. It would have been a good thing if a wrench was included with the pistol. Seems like a small enough item to be included for the higher pistol cost. Ah, well.

Yup, Al. Brand new just off the shop's production bench this year. I tend to pick "special" winners.

Thanks to you fellows for providing suggestions to my "help" shout. I'll let you know what finally gets resolved. It's been an interesting chase so far! :)
