Some BP questions

This is a Lyman that I built from a kit. 54 Cal. These babies are fun. I won a lot of nice prizes at the pre 1840 Rendezvous shooting this on the wood's walk.

I have a Lyman GPR in 54 thats also a flintlock. Put an L&R lock in it along with some Davis triggers. Havent shot it to much but thats soon going to change. I love shooting Hawkens and have several of them

That's exactly how mine is set up. I got my parts at the Log Cabin Shop in Ohio here. Great place to shop. I also have a 50 cal percussion that I built out of a Lyman kit also and put quality lock and trigger in.

All it takes is one little spark.

I almost always shot 50 grains to at most 60 grains of 3f in my 50 cal. rifles. won many a match with that load. You need to start with 50 grains and go up 5 grains at a time until you get the best groups. 5 shot groups. that will be what your rifle likes the best. Also give the rifle a bit of time to break in the barrel. Maybe up to 100 rounds.

I always seem to be late to the party . I don’t know diddley about flintlocks, Hawkins and the like. But I do know about BP .45 calibers. I’ve a White White Tail Hunter. It’s actually a .451. Fast twist for a Muzzie - 1 in 22”. It shoots custom conical - and they’re not real hard to find. When you find a good one just stock up. I use 75 grains of 777 2f with musket caps behind a 400 grain hollow point “trash can” as my son calls them.

These group a smidge over an inch at 100 yards with a Nikon Slug Hunter 2-5. None of this applies to what you’re looking to buy and shoot. BUT - don’t sell the 45 BP short. That little 22” barrel wonder is baaad news for deer. I’d take it elk hunting in a minute. And when you hit something you know it - there’s no doubt. Like Big Al said - the boom and the smack of hitting the target is awesome. Especially if the target ends up in the freezer.

Go to the modern muzzleloader site and look up the DWB’s. They shoot more than Whites and they are a wealth of information when it comes to muzzle loading in any form and in any caliber. If you’re shooting into the wind- hold your breath.
