Cleaning 45-70 Cartridge Tube

Post by Oldguy44 » Mon Jun 29, 2020 12:39 pm

Does anyone have any tips on getting a 45-70 cartridge tube (not the plunger) squeaky clean without taking all day and using 200 patches? Mine got powder fouled on a recent desert outing. I used a bore brush and a ton of Hoppe's #9 soaked patches and there is still powder residue in there which makes the plunger stiff to insert and remove. I also polished the plunger with 0000 steel wool. So it's better but not 100% as delivered. I was thinking maybe a shotgun swab might be more effective.
Any help out there? Thanks

I use a brush with a large patch in the tube on the gun and in the tube with the plunger. I've never had to use that many patches.

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......

Thanks guys, I bought a 16 Ga shotgun brush and a mop that should take care of this in good order. I also picked up 500 3 x 3 patches that should work much better than what I had been using.

I just cut up an old T-shirt. It works.

I rarely ever buy a rifle, but when I do, it's a Henry.
