in reading about removing copper from a rifle barrel, the illustrations inevitably feature bolt action rifles .... all recommend using a chamber plug to prevent cleaning solvents from getting into the rifle's action .... I'd appreciate recommendations from folks concerning how they handle this and other things in general related to copper removal from lever action rifles

I guess if one is removing a large amount of copper, putting a rag or something in the action would not be a bad idea. For the small amount that I have been removing, I just clean the receiver as I normally do after cleaning the barrel.

makes sense .... I've never used any of the copper removing solvent .... I can't help but wonder how it affects wood

So far, just within the past few months, I have not noticed any issues. The finish is still nice. I only start using it when I got my Henry. My Marlin did or does not show any residue of copper. But, I will run some copper cleaner through it just for good measure the next time I shoot it. Hopefully, that will be in the next couple of weeks or so. The stuff that I have been using does smell though. The ammonia smell is very strong.

Based on my last outing with my Henry, removing copper residue may become part of standard cleaning procedures. Below is a link to copper cleaners that may smell better and work faster. I am thinking about trying Sweet 7.62. I seen some at the LGS when I was there last.

Trying to soak the fouling loose in an old M1 rifle I used a small black rubber plug (common in the refrigeration bidness) used for copper lines to just fit the chamber.
It corked it up tight, you would need to find the right size.

I have been wondering why I spend more type cleaning my Henry than I do my Marlin. Below may be why:

"One purpose of Microgroove rifling was to increase the speed of producing rifle barrels. Microgroove rifling is described in the patent as having 5 grooves for every 1/10 of an inch bore diameter, and that the driving side of each land would be "tangentially disposed" to prevent accumulating fouling in use."

I guess I can liken it to a "Sunday go to meeting suit": Used only on Sundays. But, I am sure; it will work every other day of the week as well.
