what size and shape patches to clean 22 henry?
I am going to buy a pro shot 26inch cleaning rod to clean my henry 22 cal. 20 inch barrel from the chamber end of the rifle as described in the video on henry's website. Not sure whether to buy round or square patches and what size of patch to use. Any advise would be appreciated? On the henry video they use round patches but not sure what size they are using.
thanks

Round or square, Doesn't matter. You will get more patches with squares if you make your own. Old cotton tee shirts, underwear bed sheets work really well. Inch and a quarter or so squares work great. I like to used a bore snake for cleanings in my 22's and just once in a while use a cleaning rod.

I like cloth ones better than the little paper ones.

I use precut patches that are 1 1/8" in the square cut ones from Sinclair and I also bought several thousand on sale that are round 1 1/2 dia. made by Ox Yoke that were only $4.00 a thousand. With the 1 1/2" ones they need to be used on 22's with a 17 cal. jag because they will also work up to about 6.5 bore size. They say up to .270 but fit loose. I don't want to cut my own when I can get decent buys on them at the shows and my LGS. Not lazy just value my time for stock work or other gun projects.

+1 on the bre snakes. While they always raise controversy, my personal experience is this: if I clean a centerfire rifle with a bore snake, and then come back and clean it with patches, the patches still come out dirty. If I clean my .22's with a bore snake, and follow up with patches, the patches come out clean. My conclusion is the same: use a bore snake most of the time, and patches occasionally.1911ly wrote:Round or square, Doesn't matter. You will get more patches with squares if you make your own. As was already stated, I cut the size patches that I need for the different rifles from old cotton T-shirts.

If I use nicotine patches will the barrel stop smoking?

Even if it does, which is not likely, it will still shoot up. It's an addiction.RanchRoper wrote:If I use nicotine patches will the barrel stop smoking?

Re: what size and shape patches to clean 22 henry?
Well, I don't worry about cleaning from the breech on firearms that don't allow that without extensive disassembly. On those weapons, I do clean the barrel first, and the action last to get anything that transfers from the barrel to the action. My philosophy is that constant disassembly, reassembly is more damaging than any small amount of crud that is pushed from the barrel to the action. Not only that, unless you remove the brush, or pull the patch, you will be pulling it back through from the muzzle to the breech anyway.
I have a Ruger Mark I that I bought new in 1976. It has been cleaned countless times. Always from the muzzle. It currently has a zillion rounds through it. It has no crown damage that I cans see, and still works as well as it did when I bought it. I have done nothing to it except shoot and clean. Oh, I did pick up a new magazine for it last year. The original still works after a little adjustment.
If working from breech only seems better to you, then by all means, go for it. There is room for lot of different methods in this hobby.

There is, I think, humor here which does not translate well from English to sanity. - Sanya

I use the 1 inch round patches that come with the patch worm bore set. I do not like rods or bore snakes!

Next thing you're gonna tell me Is I don't need a new car when the ash tray gets full
