I hope to get the strength back up in the left hand enough to be able to do that kind of detail work again.

Funny this old post should pop back up. I was just telling Tina that I miss making the custom boxes. I am going to make one to go with a presentation knife for a friend. A surprise. He won't know until he opens the package.

Some may have followed that build along thread in the knife forum, where I built two knives and this box; many others likely missed it. Here is that presentation box and the custom knife for the friend. He was blown away by both. The box has a burled curly maple top, Osage Orange Sides, mahogany accent to hide the edges of the velvet liner. As a bonus, a tooled leather bottom insert with my maker's mark. ;)

Front view of the completed box:

The knife resting at home:

The bare bottom of the box:

Bottom finally dressed up:

The box had a crack and some defects in the wood, stabilized by filling with stained sawdust, then using Satellite City Super Glue. The wood was sanding to 1,500 grit. The brass on the knife was formed from bar stock and wet sanded to 3,000 grit and then final buffed with jeweler's rouge.
I enjoyed the challenge.

It turned out absolutely beautiful Jim.
I know you enjoyed as much giving the set to the doc as he enjoyed receiving it. It would be hard to let go of that one though.

I was really happy with the way that box turned out, but I didn't rate the inlay on the knife... so that made it easier. :D
There are a few other things I could inlay I HAVE earned. ;)
