Keeping Them Dry
Just curious what type of dehumidifier do you guys/gals use in your safes? I have a cannister of silica beads that re-charges in the oven. Kind of a pain, but it seems to work.
This question comes to mind because I am cooking mine as we speak. It was long overdue.
Mine is only a 24 gun safe and the cannister is good for up to 57 sq. ft.

Mark, I use the "Golden Rod" dehumidifer that sits in the bottom/back of my safe. Bought it '91. Sure seems to work.

Re: Keeping Them Dry
Thanks Tom! Happy New Year to you too!
In hindsight, I wish I had gone with the rod also. Kinda late now though. When I bought my safe, I built a pedestal for for it out of 2x8's. The sides of the pedestal are padded and wrapped in faux leather for asthetics. Anyway...it's a little late to punch the plug out of the bottom to accept a cord. If I'm not mistaken, the rod has a cord and plugs in to a/c outlet?

Correct Mark. I'm not sure silica beads were even around in '91. As long as they work, right?
Have a good one Mark.

Re: Keeping Them Dry
Mark, I use this, take it out monthly and plug it in while at work. Put it back in the safe that afternoon. Seems to work pretty good, I thought about the rod like Tom has, but found this first and I never pursued it.
Seeing how I pulled it for the pics. I will plug it in today.

Re: Keeping Them Dry
Thanks for the reply and the pics Randy. That looks like a neat little unit. Does it just emit heat, or does it collect moisture, and if so, where does the moisture go?
As I said to Tom though, it's almost too late for me to go with a plug in at this point. I would have to empty my safe and then hire some Gorillas to move it for me. My access plug is on the bottom.

It absorbes it in some crystals, in that window it turns pink when it's full. Plug it in and it drys the crystals. Try to do it every month.

Re: Keeping Them Dry
Plugged it in this morning when I pulled it out of the safe to take the pic. All dried out now. Put it back in the safe next time I get up.
