586 ejection rod unscrewed
Hello,
twice already the cylinder ejection rod of my 586 has loosened, making it difficult to open it.
Pert #1 in this schema :
What do you think ?
should I squeeze it with a drop of locktite blue?
see you soon.

Have not experienced that. But, seems reasonable. Maybe, a gunsmith would offer some insight? Me, I probably would ask one or call S&W.

Yep I would take it apart clean with Brake Cleaner and put a drop of Blue on it and tighten it up.

I agree, but I will also add, be sure to lubricate the internal parts lightly after allowing the loctite to cure a day or two! A needle oiler works VERY well.fortyshooter wrote: ↑Thu Jan 21, 2021 9:27 amYep I would take it apart clean with Brake Cleaner and put a drop of Blue on it and tighten it up.

while Blue would probably be fine, I'd try Purple first .... if it works, you'll be using the product that is designed to not gum up the finest of threads ....

BruniX, I have had my 686, ( same revolver in stainless) since about 1982 and have never had that happen. I have never removed it myself, nor has it loosened on its own.
I would call S&W and see what they say...seems odd.

Re: 586 ejection rod unscrewed
Actually, I have had it happen on more than one vintage Smith. Have even bought some vintage K frames where a previous owner got stupid and used pliers to tighten the rod and marred it up in the process.
Usually what is needed is a thorough clean and degrease of the threads, but be very careful, here, as those are very fine threads and easily damaged. You can try loc-tite, but be very careful not to overdo and gum things up. I'd try a clean and degrease first to see if that does the trick.

They may seem odd for some. For me, I am accustomed to fixing thing as best as possible, that could be a carry over from working on warships. So far, it has severed me well. Most time, I typically don't try to fix what is not broken. But, that is just me.markiver54 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 21, 2021 10:43 amBruniX, I have had my 686, ( same revolver in stainless) since about 1982 and have never had that happen. Re: 586 ejection rod unscrewed
lifting old thread but this might help someone with a easyfix,
It happened to me once that the ejectingrod got loose and locked up the gun. I took it apart and wiped it clean and mounted the rod in a unplugged drill in the drillchuck (like a drill) and filled the cylinder with spent cases to stabilize the ejectorstar and just tightened by hand turning the cylinder not using alot of force (get alot of torque gripping the cylinder so be careful. I kept an eye on the rod and it never got loose again. I never used loctite.
