Mare’s Leg questions

Post by SGC » Thu Dec 19, 2019 12:23 pm

Anyone found a source for a Leather butt cuff for the ML? Looking for a quality piece, found some on-line but the looked a little flimsy.

Also, has anyone tried the skinner peep on their ML? I am thinking of the drilled and tapped setup so it sits low. Winged would be nice too for protection. I have added the HiViz front, but I like the skinner on my SGCs over the buckhorn. Thanks for any insight you can provide.

I put a Skinner Express peep and front post on my ML 44 mag. Got it sighted in by filing down front sight. Windage is dead on. I use the "cheek" hold method and it's just like shooting a rifle. Yesterday at the range, I was consistently hitting human-size torso targets at 50 and 75 yards. Not bad for a "useless" range toy. I would trust my life to my ML. I also have a suede leather wrap tied with rawhide on the butt-stub. I'll post a pick and web site. Helps with comfort for my cheek hold.

Yes, thanks. Seems to be a constant work of love in progress. LOL
The Mare's Leg is fun to shoot. I love the .44 mag power in a small package. Generally speaking, the Mare's Leg gets a lot of "hate" on most gun forums. I wondered if those who speak negatively of it, well, have they ever shot it. You can develop proficiency with the Mare's Leg if you spend time with it on the range. I use the "cheek" hold method, putting the butt-stub along my cheek as a point of stability. I am gaining accuracy and confidence the more I shoot it. Makes a great truck or motorcycle gun.

Here are the promised pics of my butt-stub cover. It is a suede leather wrap that I had to cut/modify to fit the Mare's Leg butt-stub. It is actually made to fit a rifle butt stock. The web site is: http://www.cowboyactionleather.com/product/BC01

I had originally put this one on a Marlin 1894c .357 mag Cowboy carbine.

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......

I have two from Two Sticks Leather. I sent him a buttstock and he made them for me about six years ago.

This is a custom made .22WMR Mare’s Leg with an octagon barrel, custom large loop, Skinner receiver cover mount with a Stevens 3-hole peep, and a Lyman globe front sight.

I didn’t realize you had asked about the Skinner sight mount also. If you look at the picture of mine you will notice the plug where the barrel sight was. The sight radius nearly doubled making it more accurate to aim.
