More Discontinued Rimfire Scopes

Post by Yornoc3 » Mon May 11, 2020 4:18 pm

A while back there was a discussion here about Nikon exiting the rifle scope business. Adding to that, I've noticed while looking around for options for a soon to arrive Tikka T1X .22, that Weaver has discontinued their Rimfire line, Leupold shows 2 new Freedom RF models, and the compact fixed 4X RF, but not the 2-7 x 28 RF, and now I've seen that the Burris Droptine 2-7 x 35 and 3-9 x 40 .22 reticle models have been discontinued as well. It seems that most buyers these days are looking for "full size" AO higher magnification twistable turret scopes in the 4-14 x 50 range. It's getting so that a scope curmudgeon like me has to hunt (pun intended) to find an old school, small, lightweight scope with hunter turrets. Which brings me to the Sightron S1 3-9 x 32. Fortunately, it's still being made; just over 11 inches long, weighs about 11 ounces, with a simple medium crosshair reticle. Its a lot like the Weaver 2-7 x 28, possibly slightly better glass. It's going to go on that Tikka T1X, and I just bought another one from Midway, just in case ;) .

220, that's good to hear. I did see that they're built to be "centerfire tough", so a .22 will be a piece of cake for 'em. Having the parallax set for 50 yards wouldn't hurt a thing for a 45-70 or .357 either.

Nikon was my go to scope brand, so Nikon getting out of the scope business has been bad news for me. Oh, I have some of the Freedom Leupold Rimfires, but sure wish they'd bring back that gloss 2-7x. Nothing against matte scopes, but some of our 22 rifles do look better with a gloss scope.

understood because its the same way with me .... I haven't had to buy a scope since Nikon went out .... at this point I wouldn't have a clue as to where to start looking

Shorter parallax, compact size and weight, to me they are just a better fit on a lever action than a full sized scope.
My Henry 327 wears a Leupold freedom 2-7 rimfire.
My sako quad rimfire wears a Burris 3-9x32, I don't rate it as highly as the sightron or leupold. Much more critical with eye placement and I dont think the optics are as good. It is only due to the multi zero turrets that it hasn't been swapped out.

That's why I like them on .22 RF bolt actions, too. In the case of the Tikka T1x, I'm setting it up to be as similar as I can to my T3 .270. By virtue of the receiver being built on the same basic format (albeit a little shorter), I can use the same style Talley lightweight rings, and the T1x uses the same trigger and the same stock design as the T3. The Sightron S1 3-9 x 32 is proportionally the same (slightly shorter and an ounce lighter) as the Leupold VX II the T3 wears. It'll be closer to being a twin of the T3 than a "mini me" ;) . It should be like getting range time with the .270, only cheaper and quieter.

Graf and Sons has the Sightron SI rifle scope 1.75-4x32mm matte, Duplex reticle for $101.24. I like that one. May just order one just to have on hand. A dandy!

I see Burris also no longer lists the Timberline 4.5-14 X 32 A.O. Scope. That was another one that worked well on a rimfire...with the adjustable objective, and 1/8" @100 yard clicks, it was well suited. Shame...
