New scope for the Henry H010 45/70

Post by Grunt67 » Wed Apr 29, 2020 11:21 am

Finally pulled the trigger, on a Leupold VX Freedom 2 X 7 X 33mm scope today, paired up With Warne Maxima base, Warne
Maxima horizontal rings, from Midway. I was going to order from Mid South Shooters, but they didn't have that ring, would have been
a bit cheaper.
Honestly, I really hated to scope this Henry, but the old eyes & trifocals, just don't get along well with open sights. So, you do what
you gotta do.

Your preaching to the choir here about eye sight, was thinking about the same scope, let us know how it works for you.

All my non competition rifles have scopes. I try to focus on the front sight and center the blur. I have a 2x7 on my 30-30 and like it a lot. Let us know how it works out on 45-70.

Grunt and 4450, I recently put a Leuplod VX 1 2-7x33mm shotgun scope on my BB steel .45 Colt. It works well with the Henry's.
You'll get along nicely with it. They're pretty trim for a 2-7 scope and clear as a bell. Think you guys will like it.

Thank guys. I didn't want or need a bigger scope in power or
physical size. I think this will be fine for my needs
Cover where I hunt is thick.
Scope should be here in maybe a week or so, depending on
how far behind Midway is .

Scope finally arrived today. Got it installed, can't sight in today due to weather. Did bore sight it, so maybe that''ll help some.

Oh, yeah! Once you have it sighted in, you're gonna be a happy camper. Didn't think I'd be scoping my levers; eyesight told me differently.

Honestly, I don't like the idea myself, but, the eyes have it as they
say. The old peepers ain't what they once was. So......

How close is your rear sight to the bell on the scope? With medium rings, I had to remove mine and install the dove tail fill in blank.
Good choice on scope and rings too. What load do you plan to dial it in with?

I used the high mount rings, close, but not touching.
My reloads are Hornady 300 gr.JHP, Starline brass, IMR4198
41grs, CCI LR primer. Works great

I went with the Freedom 1.5-4x20 and low rings.

John, I pondered on the ring height for quite a while. Couldn't find any specs on dimensions, etc. Wanted to keep it low, but my nerve
and my gut won out & went with the high rings. Good thing I did, or I'd have to remove the rear sight. All worked out, thankfully.
Nice looking rig you've got there also. Great choice.

Finally finished sighting in the scope, works well. But, I now have a yellow spot on my right shoulder that exactly matched the recoil pad. Imagine that, LOL.

Imagine that! Ah, you'll get used to that rifle. And I bet it's accurate.

I put quite a few rounds thru the beast, so guess it's partly my fault, but it was fun & it is accurate. I knew it was getting sore, but didn't notice the bruising 'til a day or so later. Oh, well, live to fight another day.
