Good rimfire scope upgrade

Post by Cofisher » Tue Feb 25, 2020 2:30 pm

Hey y’all. I am looking to upgrade my Remington 550 with a scope better than my old Weaver. It has done the job, but is getting dusty. I am also looking to increase the magnification. I don’t intend to shoot 1/2” groups at 100 yards, tho that would be fun.

My budget keeps me at $200 or less. What are your ideas?
Any help is appreciated.

Jim

I really like my Burris scopes. I bought a E1 4.5-14 X 42 off ebay with free ship for $179 last month. Don't know if they're still around at that price or not.

Cofisher, what Weaver is on it now? Weaver 2.5-7 rimfire would be a good pick. Weaver Classic Rimfire 2.5-7x28mm.

It is an old b-4. Adequate, barely. Getting more crud in the view. I am not confident in disassembling and refurbishment. I know it is a classic in looks and tradition. But, I go with performance over style.

I’ll check the Weaver out. Thanks

Yeah, keep that old one for memories. I have an OLD Weaver K4/El Paso, steel tube and kinda foggy. Not going to have it repaired. Sits on the shelf collecting memories.

Yeah, mine too. Moving on. Won’t ever have a +100 yard shot. But, want the best option.

List price is a bit more than your $200 cap at $235, but the Leupold 2-7 Rimfire scope is a nice little piece. Compact and clear. You should be able to find one for less than list if you're interested.
I like the old Weavers as well, and don't find the glass too bad (once the dust is cleaned out of 'em). I have a K-2.5, a B-6, a C-4, and a D-4.

How do you clean them? I know the 4x is adequate. Just think there is a better alternative.

Just curious. What kind of a scope mount do you have, now? Are you setup so that you can take a 1" scope? The old Weaver B4 was a 3/4" tube scope. Only the later vintage 550s had a grooved receiver that would allow you to use a 1" scope.

I have the B-6 apart right now...took it apart a couple of weeks ago, and got distracted by other things. If I can make the time tomorrow, I'll take some pics and post 'em here...gives me a reason to clean the lenses and put it back together.
