1-4x 20 Scope

Post by Redthies » Thu Jan 16, 2020 11:21 pm

I know a few on here are using and loving the Leupold 1-4x20 scopes. I would just go and get one, but I can get a Nikon M223 for half the price. I’m looking to use this on a .30-30 carbine, and it’s obviously “designed” for .223 rifles. Is there any reason why I couldn’t use this scope for a .30-30? My thoughts are that if it’s zeroed, it’s zeroed. As long as I’m not looking to use it’s BDC or 223 specific features, it should be fine, right?

Thanks RP. I’ve done a bit more research since I posted, and I think it’ll work fine. I found one for 1/2 price, and I think I’m going to pull the trigger.

Yes and you can probably use the BDC once you figure out how to use it for .30-30 ammo.

I have one Redtheis. Its on an AR in 762X39 caliber. It works fine. Havent played with the BDC on it much yet but the size of it should be good on a levergun.

Should work fine and you can use the BDC if you go to the Nikon website and use their software program with your 30-30 load. The downside is the larger eyepiece and objective bell on the Nikon, compared to the Leupold Freedom. The Nikon will be bulkier, so you won't be able to mount it as low as the Leupold on your Henry. Also, not sure where you'll be with the Nikon warranty down the road since Nikon is getting out of the riflescope business. With Leupold, warranty is never an issue, of course.

I, too, like the lower power 20mm objective lens variables, particularly on carbines, be they lever action, single shot, or bolt. For sure, the Leupolds are more "trim", as NCG just said; they're still following the old school style streamlined look. Many current scopes, with the bulkier ocular eyepieces and squared up turrets, look to me like they should go on a diet. And don't get me started on "clickable" knobs ;) . But they sure do have good glass :) !

My buddy and I were talking the other day and he made the comment that new cheaper scopes are better than the high dollar scopes 30 years ago.

I have a 3-9 40 Nikon on my H001. It is a good scope. I have a Vortex on the .357 BBS and like it just a little better. Biggest difference is a more generous eye relief on the Vortex.

I wouldn't worry about the warranty of the Nikon, I have several, a couple I've had for years.
I have yet to have an issue with any of them.
Other than the fact that NCG mentioned about not getting it as low as the smaller, I say go for it.

From the information some dealers have been telling customers with Nikon's warranty if they replace a scope under warranty you could possibly get a pair of binoculars in return. I have quite a few 1-4x20 Leupolds and never have sent one back with an issue and no worries if you do on getting treated right. Leupold is like the Henry warranty but it is on scopes and not guns. ;) :D I like Nikons but only the old ones with the locking ring eye piece with the Leupold size ocular.

I caught a Nikon Blackforce 1000 1 -4 X 24 on sale before Christmas from Midsouth shooters for 199.95 with free ship. I really like it. I mounted it on my Radical Firearms 556 16 MLOK and really like it. I see their up around $300 now but if you could fine one they're really nice.

The Leupold is 39.6 mm and the Nikon is 41 mm diameter (that is 0.05” difference). Not a deal breaker in my books! I’m also a Nikon guy, and have 2 other of theirs scopes already, as well as about $20,000 in camera gear. I’m not worried about warranty on a $149.00 scope.

This one also has the “point blank” reticle, which I realized later is just a cross hair with mildot at the intersection, so the BDC thing is a non issue.

I ordered the scope today. $149 with a further 10% off on Natches website. I’m hoping it’s what I’m after when it arrives...

Will do Vaq. It’s going to be a little while before I get some rounds through it, but I’ll post some pics when I get it mounted. I’m going to have to take the action apart and do a quick polish on some of the internals of the 336. It is not nearly as smooth as any Henry I’ve ever cycled, but it has potential.

Arrrrrgh, she be mounted! The $149.49 that Natchez is selling these for is a steal. It’s a very nice piece of glass! Comes with both flip up caps too. I mounted it using some QD rings I had, and also ordered a Skinner LoPro 2 sight to stick in the dovetail. The dovetail is slightly off level, which is noticeable with the factory buckhorn, but won’t be with the peep.

Nice collection! I have been looking at shotguns. I think one will be the next addition to the toolbox.
