Dovetail filler update page 2
Dovetail filler update page 2
I removed my rear site on my Henry BBS .357 carbine. Ranger Point sells a shaped dovetail filler. Without removing the front hand guard my measurement closest to the hand guard is .6570” in diameter. They offer .900” and .850”, has anyone installed one of these and what size did you get?
I’m thinking of getting the .850” and fit it, but they run $34 and I don’t want to waste my money.

Re: Dovetail filler
Shootest, thanks for looking into this. I am interested also. My measurements are similar to yours. The barrel, measured on top of the hand guard, is about .725. I know this is not the full diameter. But it gives us an indication.
The .850 filler is as big as I can imagine being right.
I agree on not wanting to waste money or time. Makes it a challenge, eh?
I am going to try it. Can't say when. I will update you when I do.

Are these what you're looking for - or am I just being thick?

Re: Dovetail filler
Check out Skinner's dovetail blanks for Henrys. I have the version that mounts an extra aperature for their rear peep sight, but they also offer a simple blank to fill the slot for $7.00.shootest wrote:I removed my rear site on my Henry BBS .357 carbine.

Re: Dovetail filler
Man, got bumped again by a nearly simultaneous post. Starting to bug me.
Anyway, Les, you're not thick! The Precision filler is contoured to be flush with the circumference of the barrel when it's installed, such that you can barely see it once it's drifted in.
As noted, one pays quite the premium for such aesthetics, which I've not been able to justify so far!

Re: Dovetail filler
@Les No not thick, this is what I’m talking about. It fits the contour of the barrel.

Re: Dovetail filler
Here is what the .850" looks like on a BBS 44Mag Carbine.
They fit a little loose - I used some blue loctite to glue it in place. Gives a nice clean look to a round barrel Henry...

Re: Dovetail filler
I’m interested in this as well. When my budget allows I want to put a Skinner Big Boy Express rear sight on my BBSC 357. I’d live to be able to usu this flush dovetail filler.
Re: Dovetail filler
This is what I have on it now. Looks like an ugly bump.
tractortad, that looks great!!

Re: Dovetail filler
They do give a nice clean look - wish they also made them for Octagon barrels...
Re: Dovetail filler
@tractortad Well thanks a lot!!! I just ordered one, hopefully I’ll get it Tuesday, they’re only 3 hours away.

Re: Dovetail filler
Ditto! Glad to see a successful use. I will definitely be ordering.
Thanks for your input.

Re: Dovetail filler
I ordered an .850 for my .357 BBSC and it was too big. I’m interested to see if they fit your rifles. They are such a tiny part it would be easy to get the wrong size in the packet.

Re: Dovetail filler
When I bought my talley rings for my scope, thought I would need the dovetail blank if I had to remove the rear buckhorn. I bought the skinner blank. Turns out I didn't need it. Maybe I will use it on my next henry.
Re: Dovetail filler
Redthies, how much too big? Will a file do the trick? Tractortad, did you have to adjust yours?

Re: Dovetail filler
The .850" I ordered fit almost perfectly - just needed some blue loctite to stay in place. Maybe the Henry 357 barrel is smaller than the 44Mag? Kind of doubt it...Cofisher wrote:Redthies, how much too big? Will a file do the trick? Tractortad, did you have to adjust yours?
Re: Dovetail filler
Huh. Redthies, any ideas? I really like the idea if we can make it work.

Re: Dovetail filler
Fitted and installed the filler.
It was a little large
I used a honing stone to work it, turned out pretty good. Maybe later I’ll file it to better match the barrel contour..
