Scoped my Henry Due to Old Eyes

LOVE my 357 Henry but the buckhorn sights just didn't cut it with my 76-year-old eyes. For a starter, I got a cheap 2X8X20 scope off of eBay to try in low rings. Immediately after mounting the scope and bore sighting it I discovered the butt stock is now too long to get a proper sight picture through the ocular. I now see a large black ring around the edge and a central area like I'm looking through a peep sight. I can't move the scope any farther back, it's a far back as I can get it with the size of the small scope and the short scope base. Shortening the butt stock is the obvious answer but I would hate having to do that to the walnut stock.

Are you able to post a pic of your set-up?
I would definitely look at a different scope or base, or both before doing anything to the stock. On my BBS 357 I use the Talley base and have a small 1x3x20 weaver scope, which is small, and it works great. I discovered right away that the buckhorn wasn't going to work for me.

well understood .... regardless of their actions, we've mounted scopes on all of our centerfire rifles with the lone exception being a Winchester Model 94 .... while I prefer the look of a lever action rifle with iron sights, my reality is I do much better with a scope .... sadly, I prefer Nikon scopes and they are getting pretty hard to come by .... hopefully you will be able to find one that meets your needs

Your problem is most likely that your butt stock is too low to properly see thru a scope. Here’s an instant fix for you. This is a buttstock check riser that I move from rifle to rifle in seconds. It gets your eye high enough that you can see thru the scope perfectly. Here it is mounted on a Big Boy. They are available from most online gun shops or Amazon.

To check yours place the side of your chin on the stock not your cheek and see it the scope clears up.

Thanks for the info, I'll give that a try. I really didn't want to do any cutting on the stock.

I just scoped my .44 today. It will only be a hunting gun, and the scope will help with low light.

Looks great Red. Perfect scope for a pistol caliber carbine with that good ole’ lever action.

Yup. 1-4x Nikon. I’ve heard a few people slagging Nikon lately due to them choosing not to make rifle scopes anymore, but I think they are great products, and I take a certain pleasure in using them on my hunts. Kind of a subtle cerebral screw you to them for getting political in their manufacturing. I have used their camera gear for decades, and have many magazine covers and spreads shot using Nikon gear.

A big thanks to Henry for sending me the Talley mount and Henry hammer extension free of charge!
