New 327 BB with Skinner and factory front.

Post by LJM » Fri Sep 25, 2020 3:51 pm

First shots with the new BB were close right our of the box, but 3 inches high with the Skinner all the way down and a 6 o’clock hold. I would rather use a center mass hold, just because I am more comfortable with that.
I have read that it’s better to have the rear sight 1-1.5 turns up for zero. Is there an estimate of how many inches 1 turn if the Skinner would be. I am thinking if I have to replace the front sight, I would go with a Lyman Globe just because the sight picture seems better for my old 59 year old eyes. I would like to calculate the height of the new front sight for that setup.
Any advice from people with more experience than me would be appreciated!

I posted a way to calculate the front sight height for use with the Skinner peep sights in this thread http://henryrifleforums.com/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=9043.

If you supply the distance between the Skinner peep and the front sight on your rifle, and the range to the target at which you were shooting 3 inches high, I can help with the calculations.

Thank you LeverGunFan!
The sight radius is 19.5 inches. I was 3 inches high at 25 yards with a center hold. I was right on with a 6 o’clock hold. Since I would like at least 1 turn of adjustment on the rear sight, it looks like I need 3 inches/900 inches * 19.5 = 0.06435 + 0.025 for a total of 0.08935 added to the 0.5625 front sight to get back to a center hold.
Does that look correct to you?

LJM, looks like you are right on it! I see that Skinner has a .650 inch front sight that would be very close to what you calculated. Do you plan on shooting mainly at 25 yards? I am sometimes surprised at what happens when sighting in at shorter ranges and then shooting at longer ranges. You may want to see where your Big Boy shoots at 50 yards before changing anything, especially if you anticipate shooting at longer ranges. Let us know how it all works out.

I shot it at 50 yards and it was close considering it was an inside range and I could barely see the target. At 100 yards it was 6 inches low, but again I could not really see the target.
I think I will go with the Lyman 17AUG. It is 0.584 high versus the 0.5” that I have now from the factory.
That should give me some room for adjustments.
Thank you for your help! I’ll post after I make the change.

The Lyman sight is a good option to a straight blade front sight. The dovetail bead sights top out at .570 inch, so it's hard finding other tall front sights when you need something just a bit higher. Your 327 Big Boy looks like a fun gun to put on target!

How sensitive is the point of impact on your .327 to different ammo. I used to like Lyman globes on my target rifles. Let us know how in works out.

Ammo is so hard to find right now that I have only shot 85 grain Federal so far. 3 inches high and a bit right to start with. I couldn’t lower the Skinner so I adjusted windage and switched to the 6 o’clock hold and it was on target at 25. Switched to 50 yards and was still close.
I will be shooting 100 grain federal soon at 50 yards to see how she does before I switch the sights.
Thank y’all for your help!
