I swore I would never put a scope on my BB 44 mag but have changed my mind. I know there are going to be differing opinions on the answer to my question. I need advice on a scope selection. I live on a fixed income so funds are limited. Since my shots will be 50 to 100 yards I was thinking of a 1-4x or 2-7x or similar. I would like to shoot farther but may not be possible with the low power I want. Cost is a big factor for me. I also want it to be able to hold up to the recoil. Is there anything that fits the criteria or am I out of luck? Thanks

I am currently using the 1-4 on my carbine 357. It is excellent for the 50 yard range and adequate at 100 yards. I think I will move up to the 2-7 for my next upgrade. It should make that 100 yard picture better.

first welcome to our forum, happy to have you join us .... our favorite shooting range for our Henry 44 Mag is 75 to 125 yards .... there is an old rule of thumb that you us a scope that has a maximum power equal to 1 power for each 10 yards you anticipate shooting .... we topped ours with a 3 X 9 Nikon and have been very happy with it ... the Nikon Prostaff line is reasonably priced, very clear, tough (stands up well to hard recoil), and is reasonably priced .... please take a look at our How Many ? thread (link below) and add your Henry to our community total

If I was to do it I would do the 2 X 7 Burris. Im not sure what your price range is but I have a couple of those and they are a great scope for the money. Al

The best optical value for your dollar is with a Nikon Prostaff 2-7x. You'll have to spend more than twice as much to get into a Leupold model in the same optical quality. Way better, optically, than the lower grades of Leupold. I'm optically fussy about my scopes, but I do use a lot of Prostaffs. Have them on many, many guns and have never had a single failure. My only complaint with the Nikon 2-7x is that it's rather large as a 2-7x scope goes. Have no issue with that on a bolt gun, but I prefer the slimmer profile of the Leupold 2-7x on a lever gun. Minor point, though. If you're on a budget, go with the Nikon. Should be able to get one for about $150.

I have a Nikon Prostaff rimfire 3x - 9x 40mm on my H001, and a Vortex Crossfire 3x - 9x 40mm on the Henry BBS in .357.

Both are good scopes IMO. Between the two I much prefer the Vortex. It has a much more generous eye relief than the Nikon. Both are in the $150 range every day and can be had for less on a good sale.

I ended up buying a Weaver 3x9 40. I have not received it yet but will post my review later. Thanks to all for your help.

My only decision now is since I have the carbine whether to zero the scope at 50 or 100 yds. Or longer?

with standard, full power 44 Mag level loads, we zero ours a couple of inches high at 50 yards .... that gives us a fairly flat trajectory out to something over 100 yards .... with 44 Special or other low power loads we have found the trajectory is too highly curved to fire much over 50 yards

That sounds like a good way to go. Most shots where I hunt will be 30 to 100. Maybe a longer shot if hunting a farm field but very rarely. Gonna try some coyote hunting so have no idea those distances. Mainly hunt Indiana whitetail. Thanks for your input.
