Decided to adjust the diamond insert on buckhorn

Post by Retlawman » Sun May 29, 2022 7:59 pm

Hey guys,

I took my new BB .357 Carbine to the indoor range and I had a tough time with these buckhorn sights. My vision isn't the best and it was very difficult for me to place the gold bead in that tiny unotch. I was also shooting a bit high beyond 15 yards up to 25 yards. I had the elevator lowered to the max.

I figured the only way to lower it further was to lower the diamond insert. I think my eyes also prefer a 6 o'clock hold with these sights. When I loosened the insert, it dropped all the way down. I couldn't remember where it was from the factory, but I figured if I lowered it too much, I could just use the elevator to raise it. I have a pic attached. Basically, the top if the diamond in parallel with the center of the screw.

Has anyone else needed to do this, and if so, did it help? Thanks

Had to adjust the insert on my sight because there was not enough adjustment on the elevator. Worked fine. Installed a Marbles tang sight on my 45 Colt today and will have to remove the rear sight to use the tang. Will take it to the range and try it out. Have another for my 357 but will find out if I like it before drilling and tapping another rifle.

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......

I took mine out of the BBB and did one of forty's cheap peeps.
Works much better, liked it well enough I did one for the Marlin Cowboy 45 colt also. ;)

Had the same problem with old eyes seeing the brass bead, changed the front sight to a Marbles fiber optic sight. Bright, easy to see, worked great! Then I went whole hog and replaced the rear with Marbles bullseye and proper front fiber optic sight. Fantastic sight picture, nothing being blocked by peep or buckhorn sight. The bright fiber optic draws your eye to the front sight, much easier to see than the brass bead.
Bought from Midway both costs about $40 delivered, also purchased a Wyoming sight drifter to install and adjust at the range (no hammer or punch needed) Took about 1/2 hour to install.

Ol'pole, those Wyoming sight drifters are a very handy little tool.
Have one myself.

Yes, I lowered the insert and got better results. Then, I wanted to improve my POI at 100 yards. I went to a peep sight. Like the peep sight. So, it stayed. Below is my work through with the semi-buckhorn. The other is my final adjustments with the peep sight. Tried to maintain a 6 o'clock using either sight.

I love the six o'clock hold. Floating the target ON the bead works good for old eyes.

I agree with BigAl. I would have to flip the diamond around or paint it black. Too distracting and draws your focus to the rear sight. Should be focused on the front sight. Had one like that on a rifle and first time out shooting I was frustrated with the accuracy. Next time out first round I realized that white diamond was bugging me. Blacked it out with a sharpie. Happy with the accuracy ever since.

Went with the Skinner barrel mount. 10-15 mins to install. Bore laser sighted and took 2 5-round groups to zero at 25 yards. Love it! I was stubborn and wouldn't quit until I had the Buckhorn sight down but it's just so much easier with a peep.
