Lyman Globe Question for Sir Henry

Post by tractortad » Wed Jul 27, 2016 2:55 pm

Sir Henry -

I am upgrading the sights on a Golden Boy 22LR and would like some of your expert advice. I'm going to install some Skinner peep sights (forward of the receiver) and I'm also interested in replacing the front with a Lyman. I saw a pic of one of your Small Game Carbines with one of these front sights on it and have some questions for you. Is that a 93 match Lyman? Why did you go with that instead of the 17A Lyman ? Which one do you think would be best for a Golden Boy? What do like about the Lyman over the other brands/types?

I'm also interested in the leather butt stock cover on that scoped small game carbine of yours - that is beautiful - who makes that?

I can't answer your questions about the sights. But the butt stock cover is most likely one of his beauties from Two Sticks Leather. His shop is on Etsy. I have a cover from him on my Mare's Leg and it is excellent. He is really easy to work with and will custom make the design for you.

RetiredSeabee - thanks. It looks like Two Sticks has a photo of three of Sir Henry's rifles for examples of his work on his website. Nice looking covers - I think I'm sold.

I have both the Skinner peep and the Lyman 17a on my GB. You will need to send your receiver cover to Skinner to get it drilled and tapped.

I actually have this combo on all 3 of my Henry's. I love the Lyman front sights. The work well and the price is right. To make them even better get a set of Lee Shaver inserts. They are much finer (more precise?) than the stock inserts.

Check this thread. Sorry about the lack of pics. They have been taken off the web. But the dimensions are there.

Pretty sure with the receiver sight on the GB I used the Lyman 17AML @.494 tall. This requires the taller Skinner peep stem.

I'm not SH but thought I'd try to help.

Thanks Squatch. I read your "The Process" post after I wrote the above one asking SH about Lyman sites. Based on your post, I went ahead and installed a Lyman 17A and ordered a Skinner receiver site for my Golden Boy. It's at my local gunsmith right now along with my Golden Boy receiver for installation. I went with the .404" 17A to see if I can get by without a taller peep stem. Like you say - it's a process, right? Anyway - thanks for the reply and thanks also for sharing your experience with Lyman sites in your excellent "Process" post - it gave me the info I needed for the same setup on my Golden Boy. Now I'm going to look into a set of those Lee Shaver inserts....

On mine with the shorter front I couldn't get the rear low enough. I Hope yours works out well. It's amazing how much better the sights are than stock.

yea - I agree - I'm going to put Lymans on all my Henrys - they make it a lot more fun with older eyes. Probably one of the best improvement/dollar you can make for a Henry rifle.

Agree with all, the Lyman front are great with the shaver inserts. Rear sight went with a Tang . Had a friend pick up my Henry and from 150 yrds hit a 6 inch round metal plate. 3 for 3 first time firing it.

Jon4ta - what brand rear tang sight did you put on your rifle? (H001T, right?)

Yes on the model and it was a marble arms tang. love it. I couldn't do much better with a scope at 100 yards and I'm not a spring chicken at 57.
