I need help with adjusting my stock Elkhorn sights
I need help with adjusting my stock Elkhorn sights
I'm taking my H009B out this Saturday. Last time I used it I had too many guns at the range and didn't have enough time to zero the sights.
So my question is about the basics.
If I'm shooting low what should I do with the rear sight ?
I assume the opposite would hold true if I'm shooting high.
Basic questions but thanks for your help.

Coach --- Here are the instructs from my H006M Big Boy manual...same stock rear sight.
SIGHT ADJUSTMENTS - Your rifle is equipped with
a fully adjustable rear sight. The rear sight is adjustable
for elevation (shooting high and low) and for windage
(shooting left and right). In order to shoot higher, you
need to raise the rear sight. In order to shoot lower, you
need to lower the rear sight. In order to raise or lower the
rear sight, you need to grab the “ears” of the rear sight,
and lift it up, in order to move the rear sight elevator,
which sits below the ears. Your rifle can be adjusted to
shoot higher by moving the rear sight elevator backward
by one or more notches. In order to shoot lower, the rear
sight elevator should be moved forward. In addition, the
rear sight contains a white diamond insert for fine-tuning
height adjustment. This part is held in place by a screw.
This reversible piece gives you a choice of U shape or V
shape and can be adjusted for height. If you want to
shoot higher, raise the insert. If you want to shoot lower,
then lower the insert. To adjust your rifle for windage
(left/right), we suggest that you move the rear sight to the
left or right as desired. The rear sight sits in a dovetail slot
cutout in the barrel. To adjust your rifle for windage use
a plastic mallet, or a hammer and a brass wedge to tap
it in the direction you want your shots to print.

When trying to find how to adjust open sights , just take a finger from each hand , hold them vertical about twelve to sixteen inches apart. Now sight across them at an object in the room. Lower the finger closest to your eyes. This represents the rear site. Notice how you have to adjust to still line up with the object. The same works for left or right=windage. Now you know what to do to get your rifle to shoot where you want it to.

Also remember with the stock rear sight there is a a small blade inside the sight. Loosen the screw with a small screwdriver and that blade can be raised or lowered for fine adjustments. It can also be flipped over. One side is a U slot one is a V. Don't be surprised if you can't get the rear sight low enough to get the bullet down onto the target where you want it. I think it's common enough that someone at the factory grabs the wrong front from the bin. Both my 44 mag Big Boy and my 45/70 had too short a front sight installed at the factory. Couldn't get either closer than 6" high at 50yds with heavy bullets. Light bullets were even worse.
If that happens I suggest that instead of sending it back to Henry you just move up to a set of Skinner sights. Unless of course you just love the "Elkhorns".

It's really cool that you have your Dad's service revolvers. What are they? And guessing they're in .38 Special caliber?Coach wrote:Mostly pistols but I do have a couple revolverPT7 wrote:Pistol or revolver?

BTW, when I answered your question on the xxxhorn sights, I knew that you were really after the larger harvest!! Easy to get that.

Adjusting sights - this is something simple I saw a long time ago.
Just remember this word FORS
It means "Front opposite" "Rear same"
For the rear sight - if the bullet impact needs to be higher - raise the rear sight (rear same)
or for the front sight - if the bullet impact needs to be higher - lower the front sight (front opposite)
If the bullet impact needs moved to the right - move rear sight to the right or move the front sight to the left.
