I decided to get pushy
I decided to get pushy
So instead of beating pistol sights to death with a hammer as I have forever, I ordered a Real Avid sight pusher today. It will work on most of my pistols.

I bought one and used it to change sights on a 1911. Good design and easy to use but you need to pay attention.

I'll let you know. Probably a week or 2 before it arrives. The Real Avid site (below) has a lot of info about it, including what it won't work on. It's the pusher recommended by Sig Sauer for their pistols, which I have a couple of. There's also a couple of demonstration video's on youtube.North Country Gal wrote: ↑Sat Mar 01, 2025 3:50 pmI really should get one of those. Love to hear how it works for you.
I had a hard time finding one on-line that wasn't $150 and up, but got it ordered thru AAFES (military) for $135.

If I can't do the job with the Brownells critter and a small hammer I go to the Wyoming Sight Drifter which is surprisingly effective. Just line it up, pull the knob and let 'er snap.
I've considered getting a better pusher but so far these are working. I'm sure that the threaded adjustment on the Real Avid would give a much more precise amount of drift.

Never heard of that, so looked it up. Price is right. And it is convenient and light weight. Not sure how effective it would be on really tight dovetails tho. Some are so tight from the factory you have to cut the sight in half with a hacksaw to get it to move - but with popular tritium sights you should be a little careful to not rupture the tritium vial - mildly radioactive!5shot wrote: ↑Sat Mar 01, 2025 11:49 pmIf I can't do the job with the Brownells critter and a small hammer I go to the Wyoming Sight Drifter which is surprisingly effective. On the other hand, the Wyoming looks like it would work for revolvers and rifles.
Precision wise, on most pistol sights, moving the rear sight .015 or so will move bullet impact about 3" at 25yds, which is one reason I prefer a red dot, although they aren't always the answer for a carry gun, hence the sight pusher. Generally, you need a holster that has been designed to accommodate the optic, among other issues.
The Real Avid weighs over 7 lbs, so not something you want to carry in your pocket or range bag.

That's a lot of guns it won't work on. I used it on a Magnum Research 1911 10mm. I took a little fiddling but I made it work without damage. It is a precise well designed tool that worked well for what I needed done. I was not able to move the sight on the 10mm with either of the tools 5shot pictured so I bought the Real Avid and it worked. I was able to adjust the new sights where they needed to be. But, it is expensive and I may never need it again. Have in box if you are interested I am sure we can come to a good price.

Too late. Ordered it yesterday. But maybe someone else would want it if you put in the Classifieds.Ernie wrote: ↑Sun Mar 02, 2025 8:07 amThat's a lot of guns it won't work on. I use the Wyoming quite a bit, in fact I'll be using it later today.5shot wrote: ↑Sat Mar 01, 2025 11:49 pmIf I can't do the job with the Brownells critter and a small hammer I go to the Wyoming Sight Drifter which is surprisingly effective. Bought a set of lower scope rings for the 444 Trapper and I need to remove the rear sight.

Re: I decided to get pushy
Got it this morning, and did the sights on the P365XL. Pretty sure Sig used a 2000lb hydraulic press to install the sights at the factory. Once I got everything properly aligned and adjusted the right knobs - short learning curve but you've got to be precise - I started pushing, but had to plug in a ratchet to get enough leverage to push the sights out. Putting the new XS sights on was pretty easy, but as usual the front sight had to be fitted some. No problem there, since I've done this without a press a few times. The XS rear sight has 2 very microscopic set screws to temporarily lock it down for sight in purposes, so didn't need to use the press on it. I won't be able to sight it in for a couple days, but shouldn't have a problem.
The press itself comes with a variety of knobs and other accessories to accommodate various other pistol designs. I'm pretty happy with it. I'd recommend watching this video if you plan on buying one.
