A little help for us old guys

Post by BigAl52 » Sat Jun 03, 2023 12:49 pm

Ive been doing this with some of my pistols. I have trouble at times picking up the sights as my eyes just arent as good as they once was just like the rest of me. Ive practiced a little bit and I think this looks pretty good. Also have gotten some comments from people I shoot with. I use testors paint white and Flou Green. When painting an area green I always use the white as a base coat as the green will show up better that way. Pic shows the rear mostly and you can seen the green its just a little blurry. I can get another pic of the green if anyone wants a better shot. To do the rear sight like that I use a toothpick with a very small amount. It works pretty good

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......

I use White Out on my front sights. The little brush is perfect for painting the sights.

I use oil based enamels to paint my front sights for the sake of durability. The hobbyist paints I've used tend to chip off with only a little use. After painting with oil based enamels, you have to wait 24 hours for the paint to dry, but the paint stays on even with a lot of holster use and shooting.

The sight paint pens they sell at Skinner seem to hold up reasonably well on a serrated sight. Like BigAl52 mentioned, the people that make the sight paint (I wanna say that it's marketed by Birchwood-Casey?) suggest putting a coat of white down first, then your flourescent orange or green. It seems to work best if you give the white base coat at least 4-5 hours to dry before ya put the color coat on. I usually let the white dry overnight, if I can, and then the same for the color.

I had a red insert front and a white outline rear site put on my Ruger Blackhawk .45 before I ever shot it. For old eyes every little bit helps.
