I’m getting ready to scope my newly acquired Henry 327 Fed Mag. I’m looking at the Leopold Freedom series in a 2-7x33 which is available in both Rimfire and centerfire versions. Differences are the reticle and parallax with the Rimfire set at 60 yds and the centerfire set at 150 yards. I plan on using this rifle for just casual plinking and don’t intend to hunt with it. I can’t imagine i will ever shoot it beyond 100 yards. That being said I’m thinking about putting the 60 yd parallax scope in it. Mostly I think I’m overthinking it.

What say you?

Id probably go the 150 anyway may not ever use it but it would be there if you wanted it

Will you be shooting up close at 25 yards more often or out there past 100 yards more often? You get more and more parallax the closer in you shoot. That's why most air gun scopes have an AO, since they are almost always shot at closer distances. At 25 yards, parallax will be less of an issue with the rimfire scope than the big game scope. Depending on the model of big game scope, you can have a lot of parallax to deal with at 25 yards.

I will probably zero it at 50 yards and then see what the drop is at 100. Unlikely I will ever shoot it beyond 100 and likely will shoot it at mostly from 25 - 75. That’s the reason I am considering the 60 yd parallax set up. If I were planning on hunting deer with it I would go with the 150 but I have other guns I would use for that. My credit card closes on the 28th so I will be making my purchase on the 29th. So I have a few days to ponder my choices but I will get the mount ordered today.

For plinking, NCG is giving you great advice. I've got shotgun scopes on a couple of my rifles, because they are parallax corrected to 50 yards. If you are open to looking at other brands, I would even suggest you look at scopes with objective focus.

I’m open to most anything that’s decent quality. My primary requirements are sufficient magnification for my poor old tired eyes and a scope that is of an overall size that won’t be too large for the rifle. A 40mm exit would be too large and I find that the eyepiece end of some variable scopes are bulky. I like the Redfield 2-7x32 but have read some pretty negative reviews so am leading towards the Leupold. To bad as the Redfield is less expensive. AO certainly be an excellent option, I’ll take a look and see if I can find AO in a smaller profile scope. Thanks!

Holy smokes. I ordered my mount from Henry on Thursday and it arrived in my mailbox on Saturday. Not bad for one end of the country to the other. Don’t have my scope yet but I just had to put the mount on. I chose the Picintany style since I don’t know yet what the ring spacing is going to be. The standard mount might be a cleaner look. Depending on how far rearward the scope ends up I may be able to leave the rear sight on the rifle.

Thanks everybody for your input. I decided to go with the 60 yd parallax and plat on picking it up today. I’m comforted by reading that Leupold does the same punish tests to the Rimfire scopes as they do with the centerfire models. Not that a .327 in a rifle is going to generate much recoil but comforting to know all the same. Now I just have to figure out what grey day I want to head to the outdoor range and freeze my ears off sighting it in. I’ll add a photo when I get it mounted.

You'll be fine with your choice. I put a Leupold FX-1 2-7x33mm Shotgun scope on my Henry .45 Colt and it works great. The parallax is set 75 yards on mine, as I normally shoot at 50 to 80 yards, so, it's perfect for me.
