Need some advice... I have placed a Skinner sight on the rifle, which works well and I am pleased with it . I was wondering if a tang sight is over kill . I thought (maybe in error ) that a tang sight was for longer range sighting. I could use some expertise.

Technically yes this is true. In the case of a rifle that was only equipped with a barrel mounted buckhorn a tang sight was the only option for a rear peep sight to gain a longer sighting plane.
Also the tang sights fold down so the buckhorn could remain in place and in use.
As time moved on and receiver mounted peep sights were developed receivers were factory drilled and tapped for these new sights.
The folding tang sight however remains a very viable and popular option as a peep sight.

The longer your sight radius, the distance between front and rear sights, the finer, (more accurate,) you can adjust your sights.
