Which leupold for bbs carbine 44?

Post by R1200rt » Mon Oct 16, 2017 12:20 pm

Im trying to decide between a vx-1 2x7x33 or 3x9x40 "shotgun/muzzleloader" scope with the heavy duplex and parrallex set at 75 yards or a vx-2 2x7 or 3x9 which has parralex set at 150 yards ( doesnt seem as useful on a 44 mag) and regular duplex. Both are in the $250ish range. So vx-1 and done or vx-2 for better glass and possibly have to send it back to leupold custom shop for a new reticle and parralax adjustment and at what $$$? I will be hunting whitetails and tin cans in the woods of Tennessee and most shots will be no longer than 50 yds with 125ish being max, limited by cartridge. Anyone used the heavy duplex in low light situations? Seems like a good thing to me. Anyway the 33 objective is about a perfect match for the with of the stock which is 38.93 and 33mm scope is 40.09 the 40 mm is 45.72 mm wide.im used to nikon prostaffs and burris ff2 so is the current vx-1 better than the aforementioned? Whatever i choose will wear the leupold alumina scope caps, i hope they dont add to the bell size. I currently have a ranger point rail, burris low zee rings, carlsons hammer expander, rear sight removed And a bushnell 3x9x32 sportview mounted for mockup. and the weaver low rings are 1mm lower and lighter so i might try them right now this setup has 10.38 mm clearance from bell to barrel, and 3.38 from scope tube to rail, i definetly could hunt with this height setup, but if i can get it lower that will help with a quick solid cheek weld, im pretty stuck on leupold because they are the lightest and most compact, otherwise id prob go nikon because i love those gold looking crosshairs and ive had good luck with them. But im trying to keep this little henry clean and light as possible. Thanks

I can definitely see a difference in clarity between the VX 1 and VX 2 series, so I generally start with the VX 2 with Leupolds. For that distance, I would pass on the 3-9x and go with the 2-7x or, even better, a 1-4x class scope.

One I've recently bought that has even better optics than the VX 2 is the VX 3i 1.5-5x and I can see the difference. Great optics and very bright (better lens coatings). Not sure what the parallax setting for this scope is, but I frequently use it up close for 50 yard shooting with no parallax issues. For carbine work, I find that 5x works just fine at 100 yards and a bit beyond. Mine is a standard duplex, but I think you can also get it in the heavy duplex. Also, being a 20mm objective scope, you can mount it very low on a carbine and not enough weight or bulk to affect handling. Definitely a trimmer scope than any Nikon. Yeah, it's pricey, but it's my favorite carbine scope, now. Worth every penny. Here it is on my TC Contender Carbine.

Yes that is very nice and clean looking, i will definetlly take a look at one, most of the time hunting i kill them on 3-5 power so that may work, my eye sight isnt the best about 20/40 with correction so i usually like a little more zoom when paper punching atleast but its also handy when im trying to figure out is that the big 8 or 9 pointer ive been after or worse yet is it a doe or button buck, i know good binos are for that but sometimes if the gun isnt up and ready its game over lol

when it comes to scopes, I'm a strong Nikon fan ... that said, in answer to your question, I have found a 3X9 power scope works really well on a Henry 44 Mag

I ended up buying the VX- 3i 1.5 - 5 x 20mm with the regular dulex. I drank the Kool -Aid on the Twilight Max Light Management System.

Regardless... nice and light at 9.3 oz and perfect for my hunting applications including 125 yard plinking.

For low light and a target that is black, eg: black bear, maybe consider a illuminating reticle scope?

Have them on my 45-70 and 44 Mag

Yep fine looking rifles, a 45-70 heny is high on my list, maybe a long ranger 308, ive handled 2 or 3 in the stores and ones action particular was slick as butter. Well my wife surprised me today and ordered a vx-2 2x7x33 so hopefully i will like it, if not i will send it back to leupold to customize, i cant wait! This rifle was a surpise 10th anniversary present so its only fitting she surpised me with a leupold to top it off.

Nice anniversary presents. Congrats I will look forward to seeing the pictures. 2x7 is the way I would have gone if I was to scope one. Al

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......

With a little luck it should be here wednesday, on a different topic, i have several 200gr xtp hand loads and several 240 gr xtps, im not sure what the velocity is on either but plan on checking with a chrono soon, i know the 240s are a no brainer but has anyone shot whitetails with the 200s? I was planning on using 225gr barnes vortx loads but found a great deal on 400 hand loads.
