Re: Single shot sight options
There have been some Ruger No 1s customized to shoot 22 LRs, but never has been a factory round. Given the low production numbers, now, on the Ruger No. 1, doubt you'll ever see one in 22 LR.
Of course, you can get falling block 22 LRs in the current Winchester Low Walls and the Uberti. This is one of our Winchester Low Walls in 22 LR. I do sit and admire it, sometimes.

Winchester Low Walls look really nice to my eye.Danwin22 wrote:Those Ruger #1’s are so pretty I’d probably just sit there and admire it.
I wish they could make a 22 Single shot that looks that good.

Hello NCG
Thanks for your write-up!
I cannot see the pics, so wanted to ask a question about your mounting system for the Ultra Dot.
Do the supplied rings work on the No 1, or did you have to purchase some additional mounting hardware?
I have a No 1 Boddington Buffalo (450-400 NE) that I plan to take to Zimbabwe for Cape Buffalo. I will be 62 at the time of the trip, so you might imagine that my eyes are not in the same shape as they were when I was young!
I have a Skinner on my H010 and like it fine in good light...would need to remove the aperture in poor light. I also have a Weaver Super Slam 1-5 x 30mm currently on the 450-400, and a Skinner that just came in that I plan to work out once I have about 100 rounds through the rifle.
I need to keep my options open at this point, and try everything that might work, in order to find the best solution. My PH says he never lets a client shoot at a buff at over 50 yards and prefers 25...that first shot needs to hit in the right spot to avoid a rodeo!
If the red dots mount easy, I might be able to justify trying that third option!
Thanks in advance,
Tim

Re: Single shot sight options
Hi Tim
Yes, the supplied Ruger rings on a No 1 will work with an Ultadot 25, being that the Ultradot is a one inch tube. I tried it and liked it on the No 1. Some would hesitate to put an electronic sight on a classic single shot, and I do understand that, but from the standpoint of what works, the Ultradot 25 was excellent. It also eliminates one of the headaches of mounting a scope on a No 1, namely, getting a scope setup that provides enough eye relief. That's always been a problem on a No. 1 (there are solutions for that, however). It's why I experimented with the Ultradot.
Note that any similar 1" tube style red dot would work with standard 1" Ruger rings, but that style of red dot is actually becoming hard to find. More and more the red dot market is moving toward reflex style red dots and red dots designed for use on the AR platform. These can still be mounted on a No 1 by adding an aftermarket weaver/picatinny adapter to the No 1 rib, however.
Heartily recommend the UD 25, though, on any magnum rifle. Very much a bombproof red dot. Have used it on some really nasty kickers and never a problem. Anything less on the really big stuff I would not trust. No time to go cheap. Stay with the Ultradot and up, such as the Aimpoint, Eotech and so on.
Hope this helps.

Cool, thanks!
For some reason I was thinking the Ultra Dot needed a proprietary mounting system.

Re: Single shot sight options
Soon, we'll be talking about this for the Henry single shots, since they're finally starting to appear. I've found that I'll need to make a slight modification to the Warne 981M scope base I ordered for my 45-70 well before it arrived, instead of using the Weaver 82, since they're both originally for the NEF/H&R rifles (I don't like the Weaver 82, which Henry says will fit, for a couple of reasons, not being tall is one ); also I've sent an E-mail to Skinner sights regarding the location of their receiver sight's rearmost mounting screw hole, should I desire to go that route instead. It seems that the scope/sight base mounting screw holes of the Henry are slightly farther to the rear than where the NEF/H&R holes were, which can complicate your life . The fix for the Warne base will be to mill about 0.10 inch from the bottom of the base, from only the rear 0.28 inch of the base, so it'll clear the receiver, making a short, little cantilever at the rearmost scope ring location. I'll confirm this works after I do it . I'd rather have Skinner E-Mail me back to say they'll be making a combination receiver sight and scope mount base for the Henry single shot, like they do for the lever guns. Then I'll just wait for it. I'm one of those guys who'd feel odd putting a red dot on a classic, old time rifle like either the #1 or the new Henry - so maybe just a receiver sight will be it, yet.
