Big Boy Steel with Weaver K4
Big Boy Steel with Weaver K4
It's been a long while since I've posted, but I finally scoped my Big Boy 357 and wanted to show it off.
Ever since I bought this rifle over a year ago I wanted a better option than the buckhorn open sights. The Skinner peep was appealing, but I really wanted some magnification. Not wanting to spoil the looks of my rifle, a modern scope was not an option. I've been searching for a good vintage scope that was functional yet aesthetically pleasing.
Here's what I came up with. It's an old Weaver K4 with fine cross hairs and dot reticle. Also sourced matching vintage Weaver rings and a modern Weaver mount that did require a small amount of fitting to match up with the tapped holes in the receiver.
To me it looks like a natural match. The pale blue patina of the scope emulates the barrel finish on the Henry nicely. The dot reticle is quick and easy to pick up. I was pleasantly surprised the scope cleared the buckhorn sight even with low mount rings. The scope also removes quickly and (unlike the mount sold by Henry) the Weaver receiver mount allows for use of the iron sights when the scope is removed.
Best part is my group sizes have shrunk considerably !

Agreed. 'Tis a "natural match."
Very nice choice of the Weaver scope,
and your Big Boy looks great set up this way.
You have the correct rifle case, too!
Enjoy.

Thanks all. Glad you like it. I appreciate the classic looks of the BB Steel and wanted mine to appear as if it belonged in a mid century deer camp. Notice also the vintage leather Bucheimer leather sling.

Also love the looks of those vintage scopes on a lever gun. Definitely has that deer camp look. Can't say I know ANY deer hunter, up here, that doesn't scope their lever gun.

Looks good. I'm gonna have to go that fitting route myself as the henry scope rail sux in my opinion. There is no reason for henry's rail to be elevated and its heavy.
Awesome.

Re: Big Boy Steel with Weaver K4
On my BB steel, I picked up a Weaver (I think that was the brand) rail locally. It was around $10 and the front two screw holes lined up perfectly. The rear screw hole was off just a tad and required a little careful elongation to get the screw to fit. I was going to use it as a temporary setup up for a small holo red dot tryout. It worked well enough that I never bothered to order the Henry rail. I even ended up swapping the red dot out for a nice Vortex 3x-9x scope and didn't see the need for a different rail.
