The FNG Needs Scope Advice

I'm in the process of getting optics for my Henry Big Boy .357. I've mounted the Picatinny rail and have decided on the Vortex Strike Eagle 1X6 LPVO. I went with the lower power, because I really doubt, I'll be shooting out past 150 yards. I also chose it for the lighted reticule since it will definitely be used in low light situations.

My concern is weight. Is anyone out there using this combo and how do you feel about the weight?

18.5 oz plus a few oz for the rail/rings. I doubt it will be an issue for you. I have a Nikon 3-9x40 on my .41 mag BBSC, which is a couple oz heavier, and haven't had any concerns about it.

I think it's perfect.

ALSO! I ordered a set of the Medium Pro Series 30mm scope rings (PR30-M). I'm concerned with these rings I may have interference with my hammer. Will these elevate the scope enough to keep it off the hammer?

I've used the sig single mount similar to the Burrin PEPR. Strike eagle has a similar mount. I have vortex separate mounts on the strike eagle, but, i prefer the height of the sig/strike eagle single piece units. Oh, my hammer works fine.

Justin B, I have a Weaver 1-3x20 on my BB brass .357 and a Leupold 2-7x33 on my BB steel .45 Colt. There's a picture on the General Henry Repeating Arms Discussion called "Firearm Partners", P. 5. You shouldn't have any problems with the Vortex.

I found that scoping my Big Boy required a strap on cheek riser to align my eye with the scope. I used the Henry mount and I think medium rings. It just barely clears both the hammer and the rear sight. Leupold Freedom 2-7X32.

Exactly the same here, except mine is a BBS.

Assuming you get the right hammer clearance and assuming you get a cheek weld that you can live with, the weight becomes a matter of affecting the handling and balance of your rifle. That's a purely personal preference, though. In the past, I much preferred keeping scopes small and light on lever guns for that very reason. That's me, though. Not an issue for some folks.

On another note, a heavy scope can have issues with slipping in the rings with hard kickers, but we are talking a 3657, here. Not an issue.

Yes there is a power off setting for the reticle.

I have the Vortex Strike Eagle 1-6x24 scope with 0.97in height scope rings on my 30-30. The PR30-M rings are 1 in high rings so you should be fine with the scope being off the hammer. I recommend getting a Hammer Extender (Grovtec), though I didn't need one.

I wish I had gotten the 1-8x24 version of the scope. The 1-6x24 didn't quite cut it beyond 75yds or so.

My Dad put the Vortex 1-4x24mm Crossfire II on his Big Boy X .44 Mag. Even though it weighs 1.5lbs, he absolutely loves it. He thinks it is the best setup ever. The 1-6 Strike Eagle is lighter than the Crossfire II, I do believe.
