Thanks for the replies. Newer Leupold scopes in the current lineup and price range tend to be 1 inch and they don't make the firedot anymore. I was thinking of getting a skinner peep but do like a little magnification. A lot of LPVO scopes are subtended to accommodate a 223 (like the Burris). I saw a couple of 1.5- and 2- but if I am going LPVO I want a true 1x included in the deal.

Settled on a Vortex Viper PST Gen ii 1-6 x 24.

Thanks again!

Have to revive this for a follow up...
I haven't mounted this Vortex yet (comes this weekend) and during my reading have found that it looks to be a bit heavy (23ish oz). A lot of 2-8's are around 15-17ish and either the Leupold 2.5-8 or 3.5-10 are less than 12. I'm just a little concerned about making a light gun at 7-8 pounds top heavy by putting 1.5 pounds on top of it. Am I over thinking this/would I notice a 10 ounce difference? Thanks for your thoughts.

Most of mine (327FM 357 44mag 45/70) wear 2-7 or 3-9x32 rimfire scopes, I think the slightly smaller size and shorter parallax settings are a perfect fit.
30 30 wears a 3-9x40 as that is what was on it when I got it. It has taken a couple of deer at close to 200y, have used it on paper to 400y and steel to 800y at those distances I was wanting more magnification.
For hunting where 200y is a long shot a top end of 6x is plenty but a little more isnt a bad thing if you dont have a weight or size penalty to do so.

Well, I got the vortex in. Really clear glass and well designed... just might look a little funky? Might be too tactical for a cowboy gun. I have a Leupold VX-3HD 2.5-8 on the way which might sit a little better. Its 1" tube might make a bit of a difference as well as the smaller turrets.

While I really like Vortex scopes and have a few I don’t care for the bulky eyepiece end. I bet the Luepy will be a cleaner look on your rifle.

Much better! That "fits" more in line with the way it should look with a scope. What's the Vortex going on?
