Torque specs

Post by Llamaman » Thu Aug 19, 2021 8:11 am

Hello,

Finally pulled the trigger (pun intended) on a Henry Steel 44 magnum. I purchased the Talley one piece scope mount from the Henry website and a Leupold FX-II 2.5x20 to top it off. A little concerned on light gathering in low-light conditions but I really wanted something that fit the lever action better than the 40 mm objective lenses on many of the scopes these days. And I wanted something with a large field of view to take advantage of the lever action platform.
I searched all over for the correct torque specifications to attach the scope mount to the receiver and the numbers were all over the place. Everything from 17 in/lbs. to 40 in/lbs. One of the posting on this forum said the answer was 22 in/lbs. That seemed light based on previous experience with other firearms so I emailed Henry. They did not return the email but called instead (wow).
So, directly from Henry: the correct torque to mount a scope base on a Henry Steel is 40 in/lbs.
Got everything mounted yesterday. It looks great.
Now for the biggest challenge....finding ammo.

Thanks for the info and man, what great customer service from Henry.

Now that you have purchased that awesome Leupold scope here’s a suggestion for next time. I’m partial to the Leupold 2-7x33. It’s a nice compact scope that looks good on a lever and the increased power and field of view should be helpful in the field.

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......

Thanks for the scope suggestion Hatchdog. If the current scope doesn't work out I'll take a look at your recommendation.

I really like the scope mount. Made from an alloy so doesn't add much weight, fit perfectly and no worries about misaligned scope rings. I've also checked out how the scope performs in low light conditions. I was having some buyer's remorse after seeing the recommendation from Hatchdog but, even with the 20mm objective lens, it's plenty bright enough from the first shooting light to the last of the day. And a large field of view and plenty of eye relief. Good job Leupold.

^^^^^^^^

Exactly, given the realistic effective range of a 44 mag the 20mm should be fine.

I also love that Leupold, mine is an older 3-7x33, it goes on my BBX .44 Mag with Warne QD rings. I thought that size was discontinued, am I wrong? Did they just change the zoom range? What is a current price?
