Well... Made it to the range today determined to sight in the 30-30 with Buckhorn sights. I brought my brass drift but forgot my small hammer. I ended up beating on the brass drift with my staple gun, not the best thing to use. I ended up starting at 25 yards and then 50 yards, about as far out as I want to go with Buckhorn sights and my 72 year old eyes. More than likely I won't be hunting with it, just target practice at the open air county range. I'm OK with the initial results and plan to improve a bit on my next range day. The Buckhorn required windage and elevation adjustments. At least I don't think I'll have to replace them with a peep sight. If I end up replacing it I'll use Skinners barrel mounted sight. I want to keep it as original as I can. Opinions on the barrel mounted peep?

I've used the Skinner barrel mount peep on over a dozen rifles. Always keep one around just in case I get another rifle I can't scope or add a receiver peep. With the barrel mount peep, I've yet to need a taller front sight. My favorite way to use the barrel peep is ghost ring style (no aperture added). Makes for very quick acquisition. Perfect sight for a short range woods gun.

In fact, I just switched to the barrel peep on my Ruger No. 3 in 45-70. Was using a barrel mounted red dot, but it just didn't seem right with a single shot 45-70, either for looks, tradition or for the way the red dot sat so much higher than the Skinner. Had to pull my cheek too high up from the stock. The No. 3 is stocked perfectly for use with iron sights. The Skinner seems like it was made for it.

undy, glad that you made it out and happy with the results. In the end, that is all that matters.

Still interested in reports and opinions of having a barrel mounted skinner peep sight. Advice and/or experiences with it appreciated.

I ended up replacing the semi-buckhorn sight with a barrel mounted Skinner sight. Prior to I talked in depth with Andy @ Skinner sights and he said that he had very few negative reports from buyers about his barrel mounted sights. He personally does very well with the barrel mounted sights. That was good enough for me as I really didn't want a receiver mounted one due to esthetics. I knocked my old one off and knocked in the Skinner sight after some dovetail filing on the Skinner sight. It looks OEM... I did a sight-picture with it and it's waaaaay better that the Buckhorn. Tomorrow my 30/30 laser bore sight will be delivered and I'll do some sighting in during the morning twilight at home, then to the range. To be continued...

Have not thought about using bore sight with an open sight. Seems like a plan! Glad you like the outcome. In the end, that is all that matters. Happy shooting!

Well... yesterday I did the laser bore sighting. At around 25 yards it was about 12" too low with windage was pretty much spot-on. I started screwing the peep stem out several times and got it within 6" low or so from the bullseye. I spun the peep stem up one more time and it popped out of the sight. Darn, I'm out of the adjustment. I talked with Rob @ Skinner and ended up ordering a 1/8" longer Peep stem to give me the ability to make final adjustments. FWIW, with my 3030 (H024) and it's "screw on" front sight I'm forced to make any adjustments with the rear sight as there's no shorter front sights available that I can find. I really like Skinner's peep as target acquisition is much faster and better over the semi-buckhorn sight. I feel confident I'll get it spot on. I'll post up after the longer stem gets delivered,
installed and do my bore sighting again. I'll post the results here...
