Another favorite gone

Post by daytime dave » Wed Oct 05, 2022 10:07 am

As I was riding home from a part time job yesterday, I heard a commentator announcing Loretta Lynn had passed away.
Her music was a staple around the house as I grew up. We lived rurally and country / barn music was always playing. It's what my father listened to and most of our neighbors. Loretta Lynn was at the top of the favorites. Her songs seemed about real things put into song.
The radio commentator said listen to Coal Miner's Daughter to hear who she was. I did that and remembered.

As I write this with my morning coffee, I simply asked Siri to play Loretta Lynn. To my great delight, she responded by just saying "now playing Loretta Lynn". Some wonderful music and memories are bouncing around the house now.

She was certainly part of the very foundation of country music. Might be time to see the movie about her life, again. She was awesome.

An American original. She outlived real country music by a couple of decades. RIP.

Had the good fortune to see her perform at the Ryman auditorium on her 85th birthday. She had a show the night before that was sold out. We couldn’t get tickets to that show but she decided to do one more that wasn’t scheduled and my wife scored three tickets. We took our youngest granddaughter she was 13 and had heard of Loretta but hadn’t heard a lot of her music. She loved the show and became a fan.
Loretta did the whole show seated and was joined onstage by her sisters, daughters, and granddaughters. She spent some time between songs to talk with fans and talk about the songs. At one point the band started the lead in to a song while she was finishing talking with a fan in the front row. The band leader started quietly speaking the lyrics to her. She looked at him and said “I know the words to it, I wrote it”. There were a number of humorous interactions between her and the band and the audience.
