I just received the following pictures taken by one of my wife's brothers .... they show a beautiful prairie sunset, an albino deer, and the albino with my wife's home town of Estelline, SD in the background

Looks nice there, love that big open country.

Beautiful. I had thought of moving out somewhere "wide" and west when I retired, and a friend at State Police had left and gone back to the Black Hills area of SD. She told me if we bought property away from town we could get a large chunk of land and a modest home for what we turned over here in VA.

I looked at the listings, and found some real possibilities... until I got deeper into my research. Average temp for the month of May the previous year was twenty degrees. May! Twenty... low temp was well below zero... in May... My friend laughed when I called her. It's the elevation... this isn't Miami. Well duh.

We decided to stay with what we had.

Twenty degrees.

My mom grew up in North Dakota in the early 1900's. I remember her stories about the Winters there. In the early 30's she had to go live with an aunt in a larger town if she wanted to attend High School, no school buses back then. She was the only one of a large family to go to High School, her 9 brothers were all needed on the family farm. It was during the Depression so a lot of people would go down to the train tracks every day to pick up coal for their stoves.

We used to drive back there most summers when I was a kid, I just remember it being hot and flat, not much scenery, mostly corn and the occasional missile silo.

Lovely photos. The deer obviously knew you were there, but didn't seem too concerned. What distance were you from it?

Our summer here is basically July and August. But we can get snow in any month.

my brother-in-law took the pictures .... knowing the area, my best guess would be 20 yards or less

Went through the Dakotas in January a few years back. I would love to go back in the summer one of these days. Beautiful scenery.

I still come back and look at these pics, the scenery is beautiful. But, we have mountains and beaches and changes in scenery here in VA... so it's all good.

I grew up in Sioux Falls and by the time I graduated I just wanted out of the state. I wanted bright lights and the action of the Twin Cities. What I got was Vietnam. Seems like a life time ago...oh wait, it was was.

It's definitely flat when you are used to living right next to the Cascades.

When I was a kid we used to drive back to North Dakota to visit relatives almost every Summer. I remember being hot and bored during the drive, no car AC back then.
