A touch of Old West

Post by RanchRoper » Mon May 02, 2016 8:55 am

Here's my watch fob: an original issued around 1900 when these guys combined their wild west shows. Shortly after that I think they both went broke. But I really like this fob. I have the original strap but this is not it. The original is quite brittle. Buffalo Bill and Pawnee Bill's Wild West Show; we'll never see the likes of that again.

Not quite "old" west but I like them anyway. Some old movie posters. I have several Tom Mix westerns on DVD. Picture quality not so good but fun anyways. From the 1920's and I have one from 1915. In his heyday in the early 1920's Mix was Hollywood's highest paid star. $10k per week.
The other cowboy star I like is Col Tim McCoy. Probably the biggest hat ever! Custom made Stetson with 9" crown and 6" brim. He was an expert horseman and weapons expert too.

That's really nice, Ranch Roper. I like "old" things just because they are old. Maybe that's because I am old.

I'm still trying to figure out what $10k/week in the 1920's is in today money.....LOTS! Mix did all of his own stunts too and some of them are pretty astounding even by today's standards. I have a biography about him that says he broke almost every bone in his body at some point in his life. He was with the Miller Bros 101 Wild West Show in the early 1900's and that's where he was seen and got into movies with the old Selig silent movie shorts. Tom Mix was the flashy early star and William S Hart was the "realism" cowboy star. I love watching them because it's like having your own time machine to take you back to when the actual old west wasn't very old, and lots of these guys were leftovers from the latter days of it. Even Wyatt Earp was a western film advisor in the teens and 20's.
