Hollyhock success!

Post by PT7 » Thu Jun 30, 2016 11:51 pm

To be honest, I don't know how the flowers/plants have managed to thrive in these recent weeks of blistering MO heat. Guess I might be helping by checking morning/noon/night, and trying to keep them well-watered.

Anyway, a reminder that all we have is a "potted garden" on our small patio. Sending these three pictures, although I probably have about 10 taken today. And the last one is mostly what this post is about -- the hollyhock success!

These are my wife's favorite colors this summer. To be honest, I'm not certain what these are, but I believe might be some impatiens. If there were a blue variety here, this pot would be appropriately patriotic for the Fourth!

These two are freshly-watered succulents. Again don't know specific names, but these were an "extra" our daughter bought because she liked them. If you can see on the right plant near the top of the plume, there is a bud starting. Will be interesting to see this finally bloom. BTW, these are the "baby pots" in the garden, measuring only 3" in diameter. I keep them in semi-shade under the small wooden bench on the patio.

My daughter was disappointed that this is all the growth our potted hollyhock achieved --- far short of normal height of six feet or so. But in a pot?!? I told her today that I considered this to be a good success for trying to grow this plant in that confined space. Next year I plan to do another single plant, but in a wider-diameter and deeper pot. I took the first picture of the first bloom and posted it on June 23rd. Today there are at least 1/2 dozen blossoms, with a promise of more to come. I'm quite happy with the plant's growth and blossoms in only seven days!

Last but not least. You can see the blue pansies still smiling at us from their smaller pot at lower right! I've read these flowers like cooler weather, and have been pleasantly surprised that they still greet us each new day. Brings grins to our faces, too! :D

Hope you all enjoy my amateur photos. Have a great day and weekend ahead!

Thanks for the photos of the beautiful plants and flowers and I sympathize with you on the intense heat that you have been having along with the southwest and the rest of the midwest. I always say that I can put enough on to stay warm in the winter but I certainly cannot take the extreme heat and humidity. From time to time we have some very hot weather but not usually prolonged heat waves here in south central Pennsylvania. My wife likes her flowers also. Here is a shot of the patio from inside the sunroom. That large leafy plant is a green pepper plant.Image

Very nice patio view, Dutch. :) I also remember your other more close-up photos, which you posted of the plantings inside your stone wall.
I'm sure you guys enjoy this view often!

Have a great day!
