Nov. 12 late afternoon hunt

I went out after cleaning my morning squirrels and having lunch. Did the dishes so my wife wouldn't have to when she got home. Headed out to a private piece of land that I have lifetime permission to hunt. Has a big deer hunting tower on it so you can see in to the thick areas. I got there at 2:30 and got settled and about three I had a tick crawling up my hand. I flicked it off before I thought about it being a tick. Then I saw one crawling up on the knee of my brown hunting pants. I ground that one into the pants until I knew it was dead. They are tough critters. So now the fun began. After having two on me I kept thinking some thing was crawling on me. So I took my sweat shirt off and my T-shirt and checked them for ticks and found none in the shirts or on me. So I dropped my hunting pants clear down to my ankles to check. I found nothing which made me feel better. Right when I was about ready to pull my pants back up some thing made me look to the rear of the tower. There was six big gobblers walking out a old logging road. I reached for the Sako leaning in the corner and stuck it out the shooting opening. They must have saw me as they picked up the pace quite a bit. I picked one out as they were leaving and took the shot. It went down and flopped a few times and got back on its feet and then headed toward the tower and dropped again and laid there with its head up and moving it side to side so I put one in its neck for insurance. Wasn't sure if it could have got back in the air or ran off so not taking the chance. Upon cleaning it at home I found I was going to lose a portion of the breast. The 222 is a little violent when hitting bone and it did smack the wing bone hard. Better to lose a little than to have the whole bird fly away. It amazes me how so many hunters think a 22 rim fire is a turkey rifle when they can take a solid hit from small center fires and get back up. Hunters here lose a lot of turkeys with the HMR which is not consistent at anchoring turkeys for keeps. This one was a nice bird at 18 lb with spurs just over an inch and exactly a 8" beard. Wife took pictures with her phone but don't know how to put them in my pictures on the computer. Now I got my turkey I will be hunting just squirrel and rabbits. Rabbits here are a bonus with there not being many with the red tailed hawks killing them off.

We can use rifles in the fall season. Shotguns only in the spring season. I like the fall rifle hunting turkey season but I have hunted with shot guns and killed many that way.

Sorry but I just gotta ask, did you get your pants back up before taking the shot?

Reminds me of those old posters showing a hunter taking care of his business with a rifle leaning against a tree and a big buck looking on.

Opps, gotta run, just had a large flock of turkeys show up at the bird feeder. I have an airsoft rifle I keep on the dining room table to keep them moving along. They make such a mess.

Snapped a quick picture first.
