School fundraiser pest hunt

Post by John M » Sun Sep 17, 2023 4:35 pm

My grandson's small rural school had pest cull comptetion to raise funds. Over 3 nights 32 teams,
165 hunters chased deer, pigs, wallaby, possums, rabbits, hares and magpies. Entry fee $15 per hunter and the possums sold to a fur buyer. The possums are plucked with the fur worth $115 a kilo approx 14 possums = 1 kilo.
Our team a family affair myself, son in law, son and two grandsons. We shot 2 fallow deer 65 possums 32 rabbits 5 wallaby and 2 hares.

Our effort ready to be counted and weighed

Some teams did very good.

Now that is something you don’t see very often anymore. Looks like fun.

Not sure how I feel about this. (sorry) Congrats on the harvest toward funds for the school, but, I could never shoot a deer fawn. Maybe things are looked at a bit differently down under. 🤷 Gotta be smelling pretty ripe there as well.
Maybe I'm looking at this wrong. I see a whole lot of carnage. Please enlighten me.🤨

I think it’s a pest cull. No different here in Wisconsin except the critters are different.

edit: I Googled "Fallow" deer and saw full grown antlered deer with spots. I then, stand corrected on calling them fawns. I do however still have to ask; are they considered a pest in New Zealand?

I do not class them as pests more a valuable resource for food. Getting out hunting is great for my health and fitness. There was very little smell as we are just into spring and night temperatures were 3-5 C.
