My JC Higgins scores again

Post by Vaquero » Tue Oct 31, 2023 8:42 pm

Yep, the ole JC Higgins in 35R scored again this afternoon. It was about 75 yds. and walking, and a bit faster than I judged. But the 200gr cast bored straight through both lungs.
I was aiming at the shoulder, but was just a wee bit behind. He ran 100 yds. maybe a tad more before pilling up.
Seeing how it's Halloween. I am calling him a devil deer.🤣with his 10" spikes.

Yes sir, it is what they call a store brand.
Made by Marlin for Sears, I also have a Westernfield in 30-30 that was made for Montgomery Wards.
They were like a economy model. Most are quite accurate as is this one.
Here ya go earlier yesterday on the way to the stand. This one is almost as old as I. According to the sn. It was made the end of 60 to early 61.

Congrats on the buck, those sure are tall spikes. Nice rifle too.

Looking at all those crunchy leaves on the ground I can see that hunting from a blind of sorts is best.

Actually I had been easing down one of the 4-wheeler trails, that's where I took the pic by the big hickory.
But the wind was getting up pretty good, so I made my way to a box stand that has been good for me in past years. It sits on the edge of a pretty decent size field.
This first pic loòking north.

This is east, over on the right is where he came from, right about center in that gap is where I shot him. He doubled back into the woods where he came from.

This is to the south.

Congrats on the buck. Those store brand Marlin 336s are very nice and are right there with the actual Marlin branded 336s as far as build quality. Just some minor differences in the stock design, but still very nice. I had a nice Western Field version in 30-30 at one time. Have heard that some Marlin fans like to collect these.

Lol, I have one of those also, and in 30-30.
It was the one I used year before last on a nice 8 point.
I like the store brands as the are of the sporting carbine style and don't have that barrel band on the end of the stock.
Some say that the SC's are a tad more accurate, but I don't know as I have an RC model that shoots as well as the Westernfield. :D
