Put up my first tree stand

Post by daytime dave » Tue Oct 25, 2022 4:21 pm

I put up my first tree stand today. I had selected a tall maple and brought the stand over from my stepson's place. He wasn't going to use it, so I would. I cut down an old apple tree and then he heard my chainsaw so he stopped over. He's really good with a saw and took out two limbs where I would be sitting. It would have taken me a long time.
I need to ratchet strap it in and put some hang pegs up. I plan to be sitting there opening morning. I may look at safety harnesses too.

I have a couple on the neighboring farm and a climber, but I much prefer my box stands more now a days.
Plus I can add a heater if need be.

Good luck.

Strongly recommend a safety harness, Dave. I always did after meeting a guy permanently in a wheelchair who fell from his stand.

Tina bought a tree stand for her use the last couple years in VA and I insisted on the tree stand harness and the safety rope. It allows you to pull yourself up to relieve the pressure so you can release the harness. You can do serious damage if you hang in the harness for an extended period. Read up on it, and I think you'll make the investment on both.

DO NOT USE RATCHET STRAPS ON ANY STAND. They will deteriorate from UV light and squirrels knawing them. Over on the SC outdoor forum a member did that and took a 20 feet fall when his old nylon ratchet straps broke. He lived but many surgeries to get him back somewhat normal...........ALWAYS use chain and turnbuckles......They will last forever.

Good suggestion. I have plenty of chain that would be perfect. Turnbuckles too. Thanks for the information.

At my age, I moved away from hanging stands and climbing stands and now use only ladder stands. I am not as high off of the ground as I used to be but it still works. Safety harness is a must. I don't remember the brand I use but it is built into a vest that has pockets that come in handy.

I’ll have to 2nd all the safety recommendations. I’m one of the lucky ones. Years ago I fell 15’ from one and come out with some fractured and bruised ribs. Luckily I had talked my son into going with me and he helped get me home. Then 20 miles in bed of truck to ER.

I always used box stands whenever I could. I did have some ladder stands and got deer from a couple of them. The best thing about the ladder stand was the portability. I could move it whenever I saw deer patterns changing. Box stands were certainly more comfortable especially on cold mornings. A little portable heater kept things nice and toasty.
