We got out to the hunting shack about 6:30, he saw 2 deer in the hay field that's just the other side of the hog lot 10, 15 minutes after we arrived. Then right before 7 this doe walks out around 120 yds. I tapped on the leg, he was playing on my phone. He jumps up, gets on the gun, I asked. You got her? She's walking ,he said yep. Looks like she's going to just keep walking, so I made a little bleeting noise and she stop. I said there ya go. He double lunged it and just missed the heart. Didn't bleed to amount to anything. Took a little while riding around in the direction she had went. We saw about the same time, she wasn't dead yet. So I jumped off to grab the rifle and she's up and off down the hill and looked like she went down. So we sat for a couple mins, then eased down there and went right by her under a big cedar. Grandson eventually found it, but had to give it another shot.
He was tickled, first one this year, by this time last year had already gotten 2 of the 3 he got.

I will hunt this evening with my good friend of many years, a retired USMC Gunnery Sergeant. I usually don't hunt on New Year's Eve because of concerns about drunks on the highway but since he wants to go, we will. The South Carolina season ends tomorrow evening an hour after sunset but today will be it for me.
This may be a year when I don't put venison in the freezer. Should have shot earlier in the season but I always wait for The Hartford Elk to step out.

I spent a lot of time focused on 3 bucks on our private hunting property. Could have shot a doe but decided to let them have babies. I ended up not getting a shot. My son got three, so I’m going to play the “I paid for your rifle and hunter safety course, so give over…” card. I did get a fantastic rack to mount though. My bird dogs kept disappearing into the woods at the same spot on one of our regular walks, and I finally decided to go see what was so interesting. A full buck skeleton was in the trees, so I guess they were eating some good venison! I did my first home brew euro mount. If I measured it correctly, it scores 178 2/8. I think I had it on my cameras in 2022.

That’s one outstanding rack, I like how both the eye guard and one tine on the same side have forks. He was a good ole’ boy for sure and hopefully he left his genes all over the area.
My dog did the same thing several years ago finding a buck down to skin and bones on my place. Harvested the antlers and left the rest to the porcupines.
You did a great job on the mount, I really like those European mounts.
