My first hunting kill

Post by Ogur » Tue Sep 07, 2021 1:29 pm

Forest to fork. Many firsts this week. First time as a member of the hunting team. Shot the first cow on the first hunt, which was my first hunting kill as well.

She came in to my post and the first shot seemed to go wide. She did not respond like she was hit, just startled by the noise and ran in a few figure 8s behind some bushes. I had misjudged the distance. She was 200 metres away in stead of 100. It's very hard to judge out on the moors here, especially if you lack experience judging age as well. Then she settled down and started walking across the moor in a perfect broadside. The second shot sat precisely where it should. She took 3 steps and fell over. Slaughter weight was 180 kilos. That's without head, skin, feet and intestines. I recovered the bullet and while cleaning up I found another bullet. It sat in the tip of the sternum where it had done no damage whatsoever, aside from an entry hole. What an experience! 2 kilos heart, 1 kilo tongue and 5 kilos of liver are already in the freezer.

Awesome story for your first harvest. You have to be feeling fine. Well done, brother.

Remember, it's not how many guns you have. It's how many bullets you have.
