Laptop Recommendations

Post by markiver54 » Wed Aug 24, 2022 5:17 pm

I am looking to buy a laptop. The little 9" tablet and my phone are not really cutting it anymore.
I've been looking at them online and all the choices are mind boggling. GB's, processors and all other features to consider are enough to drive me crazy. I am not a gamer, so that is a non issue. I do know that I want at least a 15.5 to 17 screen. Probably 8 to 16 GB as well. I prefer touch screen and a backlit display. Most seem to have Windows 11 now.
Any recommendations are greatly appreciated. Would like to stay in the $800.00 range, give or take.

So do you REALLY need the portability of a laptop? For a home office, a regular PC makes a whole lot more sense. I have an iPad and an iPhone, my main computer is an iMac 27 with SSD and a stunning display that I bought used on eBay a few years ago. I have been a huge Mac fan for nearly twenty years. I would send you to a online store that sells refurbished late model ones, like this, with a 1 year warranty:

A reman $800 high end computer is way better than a brand new $800 laptop….

Wow! Thanks John! Never thought about it that way.🤔
The portability...is my tablet or my phone..duh.
I will look into that as an option!
I guess I would need a small monitor for the PC though...Hmmm...

Why go small if you're not getting a laptop? You can get a good 32" monitor for $300, a 27" for less than $200. Since you don't game you should be able to get a more than adequate desktop for $500.

In hindsite, I must say that I have become accustomed to the option of a touch screen which I would not have on a monitor.
In my small house, a dedicated area for a PC, plus monitor and keyboard, might be a problem. Not really room for all that, other than right in my LR .

You can get an all in one which would not take up as much room as a full desktop. Available with touch screens, as low as $750 for a 24" screen, $1000 for a 27" screen.

I have tried most of them and while some have lasted their expected life Mac has outlived them all. I understand it is clearly a larger investment but an article I read sold me on my first one. All computers are made of components from vendors, very few are 100% in house, if you compared any with the same components the Mac is a deal. My last MacBookPro lasted 10 years before slowing down, it still works but start up takes a bit of time.

I fought it for years, refused to use apple anything but now we are all in. Desktop, phones, pads, and laptops. No issues since, wouldn't go back and that is a bold statement for me. IOS was a learning curve, apple users told me it was easier and I called them all liars for a while but in all honesty it is easer once you're in.

If you don’t want to get a Mac, check out the other recommendations. But number 1 and number 3 are the iMac 24 and the iMac 27. Followed by the Mac Mini at number 7.

My wife has an iPhone 11Pro, I ran over it with the travel trailer (in Canada) and destroyed the glass. She was mortified, but a new front put that back into new condition. Her ancient MacBook Pro (which replaced a truly ancient MacBook), finally got flaky due to worn out USB ports and she got a new MB Air just last year. I use my iPhone 13 Mini in place of a digital SLR, the photos are so darned excellent. These devices are really put together well and their user interface and software is so VERY superior to Windoze. My wife has to use MS Office 365 for work and she swears at it daily, “#%^*+!!!! Microsoft!” It is not user friendly. It’s like Microsoft goes out of its way to make things difficult.

All the iMacs have no actual PC “box”, nothing to clutter your floor and desk with lots of extra cables. Use a wireless mouse and wireless keyboard and there are no cables at all, except for the power cord. My iMac 27 has a powered USB hub attached so I can charge and connect peripherals like an external SSD for data backups, which are completely transparent and painless using the built in Time Machine application.

If you tried to gave me a high end PC and $5000 to switch completely to Microsoft I would say no thanks… at the very least you should go to Best Buy or any big electronics store and compare them to PCs side by side.
