Re: December Hunter Project
Out after breakfast with some tunes in the background, (Soundtrack to Duets..) and got busy buffing out the second coat of wax. I was pretty happy with the way she turned out. A couple views of the finished project.
I sought out a professional opinion, a real critic. Miss T liked it, so I guess it passed.
I got a piece of poster board, and laid out a sheath. Been a while, so this might be a practice sheath.
After a couple false starts, I was happy enough that I transferred the pattern to the leather in pencil, then went over the lines with my swivel knife. Not everyone does this, but for me it makes cutting out the leather a lot easier.
This is heavy leather, I wanted it stiff so I had to work at it. After it was all cut out, I laid it out and test fit the knife. The extra piece you see, is the belt loop for the back of the sheath. Break time, I'll work on the sheath in the afternoon, or tomorrow. Knife fits well, but I'll probably put a strap on the sheath if the tooling works out.
Much more to come for the sheath work.... I'll push it, it's practice.

You can tell a lot about the character of a man...
by the way he treats those who can do nothing for him.
I don't look back at the things I can't do anymore with regret, I just look forward to the things I still can.

Re: December Hunter Project
Marine you are tempting me to start on a very basic knife project. It looks like a challenge that can be rewarding….or at least a lesson learned. I don't have the specialized tools you have but have pretty good basic hand tools. I dabble with woodworking and like a challenge. And currently still have all ten of my original fingers.
I truly have learned a lot following along on your projects. Thanks for sharing them.

I am happy to share, even if only a couple people are following.RetiredSeabee wrote: ↑Wed Dec 17, 2025 8:36 pmMarine you are tempting me to start on a very basic knife project. Years ago, when I made my first knife, it was because my daughter called me in VA and said, "Hey, can you make me a knife?" I too was a woodworker, and had a small shop beside the house. "I have never made one," I told her.
She told me to try YouTube, and get busy.
I watched a few videos, drove to the Richmond Woodcraft and bought a small skinner kit. She was happy as can be.
Then she called and said she needed a sheath. "I have never done leather work." Youtube.
Needless to say, years later, I have watched a lot of YouTube and bought a lot of books.
I have made a lot of knives, a lot of leatherwork, and it's something I can do from the dreaded chair.
Woodcraft sells the kits, and Jantz in Davis Oklahoma sells everything you need as well. I buy a lot from Jantz.
