about a year ago a friend who we camp with told me that he was interested in making knives .... our sons and I looked around and found several old mower blades for him to use .... below are pictures of his first blade .... the handle is made from rose wood .... its extremely sharp

Very nice. I have done several knife kits from woodcraft, adding the wooden handles, then making sheaths from scratch. YouTube is your friend.
I wouldn't mind trying to make a knife from scratch either, but... I would need a lesson or two, and a heat source.
